I posted this in Micke's recent thread but I thought I'd give it a topic of it's own too for some feedback.
The face is a copy of Micke's drawing in the thread linked above - an excersize to better understand how to paint faces. I changed the face a little, to make it look more like what I thought King Arthur might have looked like, and added the armor.
Suggestions and critique welcome.

Ahh yes. Now aware of it, it's suddenly really obvious but it looked right to me before.
I think part of the problem is that the right surface of the nose isn't clear enough - the highlight blends into the cheek making it look like part of the cheek. But the nose is offline a bit too.
Thanks.
Sumaleth.

Now this is one of my favourites so far! I like this a lot!
Could you change Arthur's right shoulder pad a bit. I kinda looks like it's pointing into him (like the eagle on Judge Dredd's shoulder pad!). If, per say, you copied the left shoulder pad, mirrored it and put it on the right hand side it would look less imposing.
Also, his head is turned slighty to the viewer's right, however, the more concealed part of his face is bigger than the side that is facing us! Move the nose a little to the right of the pic and that should sort it.
Well done. |

I was thinking the opposite ceenda. I thought the shaded part of his face was smaller than the illuminated side. |

Chapel: That's what I meant. I seem to have phrased it badly.
Sumaleth: The illuminated area is a bit too big, I suggest moving the nose towards the illuminated area.
Sorry about that.

Had me worried for a second there. Thought I've lost total comprehension on art composition. Figured great.. next my arm will fall off.

Just thought I'd post the original image too, pre the addition of overlays.
I debated long and hard about which one I was originaly going to post - I enjoy both the clean colored portraits of Micke and the gritty realism of Spooge - but in the end decided that I really liked how the beard and armor looked with the overlays.
I may have gone a little overboard on how much overlay I used on the face though.
Overlays can definitely hide the lack of skill to a point. An "ok" image suddenly takes on a fascinating look once you add an appropriate (and tasteful) overlay, and I don't think there are many other digital art tricks that can do that.
Unfortunately it doesn't totally hide the lack of drawing skills. Draftsmanship still wins in the end.

I hope this helps. The head from what I remember should be 5 eyes wide. The red lines represent your eye width. The blue lines represent the edge of the face. Notice the difference. The face is at an angle so his left side should be a shorter distance right? I drew a little diagram in the bottom.. not the greatest but it shows what I mean about the 5 eye thingy.

Chapel makes some great points there. Here are some more along the same lines.
1) On most faces, if you draw two lines down vertically from the centres of the eyes you should come to the edges of the mouth.
2) Chapel states that the face can be divided horizontally into 5 sections(i.e. 5 'eyes' wide. The nose (e.g. the bottom bit with the nostrils) is usually roughly the same width as an 'eye'.
3) The distance from the eye line to the chin is roughly the same distance as the eye line to the top of the head. The eyes are usually vertically right in the middle of the head.
If I've made some mistakes here, I'm probably going to get a bit of chastisement from Fred so I should point out that these are just guidelines!
BTW - Chapel, I'm thinking about applying to GFXartist. The webspace would be useful. I'm a bit worried about getting a sarcy comeback if I'm rejected. What do you think of GFXartist now that you're hosted there? |

Looks pretty good. I don't see any bigger mistakes with either the head or the perspective with it...However his eyelids
makes him look almost asiatic or spanish or something. There's also some
problems with the texturing in the face, making the face look like it's been carved out of wood. Sumaleth, you are right, the thing that can make the head seem out of perspective is his nose.

There are a few ways to find the edge of the mouth, but I'm pretty sure I showed it to Sumaleth in mickes quick picture thread. Draw 2 lines from the center line pass the edges of the nose.
ceenda: Gfxartist is cool. They don't bother me with a bunch of useless mail or anything.. in fact I hardly hear from them at all. Only requirement is to have that ad banner on 90% of your pages. |
