Hullo!
All righty. I've been messing around with Photoshop, trying to make my way around the program. The more I draw, the more I desire a digital tablet. (It has, therefore, been moved to the top of my wishlist, winning out over "breasts" and "social skills" and the elusive vegetable juicer.)
I was fortunate enough to have had a few comments directed my way about my linework on that "baldy" picture, and I'd like to thank you! That's great! I drew it a while back in ballpoint pen, mostly because a pen was all I had at the time. I like the pen, actually, because it makes me pay attention. Can't erase. Plus I like it rough. I mean... I enjoy a bit of the rough edges.... Yeah.
I recoloured the pic, so here's the link:

I like the lips, eyes, nose, even the chin, but I find the whole skin thing rather cumbersome. And I don't know what the deal is with her forehead, but I'm learning to deal.... The mouse just made it so difficult, damn it. While I do love photorealism, this pic needs to be the comic book type of style that I hold so dear. Line drawing and I go well together and figure drawing will remain an adventure in ballpoints and graphite for now. I'm going to put up some more of my stuff, soon, 'cause I figure y'all will get bored of the same picture over and over. Not to mention the fact that I'm so fucking sick of looking at that chick's face....
Right. I'm done now.
Hugs'n'kisses from the Great White North, eh?

Nice smile Poseidon.
Oh and by the way.. on your picture. The ears are a little low on the sides. The line work is nice. I think it would add more character if you gave her a stylin hair jobby.

I think it's a pretty niftee pic. Really "Marvel". Kinda reminds me of drawings of Maggot from the X-men when he was a kid. |

Cool. I know, I know, Marvel. Hearkens back to the days when I spent all my lunch money on the latest issue of Uncanny.
Umm, thanks for the compliment, Chapel.
I'll think about the ears. If I gave her hair, as I have in other sketches of her, it would only be a very short, tight cap of curls, because I feel that part of her aesthetic appeal is in the line of her head. She's a curvy, egg-shaped kinda gal. |

She is a curvy egg shaped kind growing to the left kinda girl. (check the center line, but don't correct it.. looks neat)
Where are the other pics of her? Post them!
Oh and I was referring to your Poseidon of the Bathtub poem. Made me laugh.
I hate it when I make typos.

Hey Brishen,
cool pic, I like the style. Yeah the more you do this kind of stuff the more you'll want a tablet, I don't know what I'd do without mine, work is nice enough to supply me with a 12x12
are you still thinking aobut going to Emily Carr? I went to Vancouver Film School here in Vancouver, great school but a little less focused on digital art (i took the 3D animation and digital effects program).
Where in Vancouver are you living? (I believe it was you that posted about moving to vancouver and thinking about emily carr, maybe I'm wrong though)
anyway cool art, keep the pics coming |

Nice work Jess..I saw the previously colored attempt at this beautiful linework and this one does it more justice!! I realize the limitations felt with a mouse and so I tip my hat to you on this one. I especially like the attention given to the lips.
One piece of advice. I'd drop in some sort of colored background, or even some mid-range gray..to really give the value structure of the head somewhere to anchor.
I'm too distracted by the contrasting white and dark of her skin on the edges, and it really plays down the subtlety of the differences in her skin (such as the highlights on her nose)
But keep it up!! Great piece!!

Chapel: I like the slight off-center-ness (sure it's a word!) of her head, too. She's not perfect. That's cool that you read my poetry. Poseidon of the Bathtub was recently published in a magazine! It was a local magazine when I lived in the North, but published nonetheless. Onward and upward! You'll see me on Oprah!
failsafe: Yeah! I definately want to go to Emily Carr, but I have to go back to high school for one semester to make up some credits. I checked out VFS but it was so wickedly expensive and for so short a time that I decided I'd prefer the BA that Emily Carr offers. I'd like to take the Intermedia program, because it has such a wide scope. Plus, it allows me to study animation as well, which I dig. Yee haw! I live in Surrey. Yeah, yeah, those Surrey girls....
Lisa: Thanks for the compliments! If I played Wing Commander, I'd probably agree....
Salty: I'd never even considered the background. But it does make sense that it would help anchor her, so she's not floating in white space. Maybe I'll attempt to draw in her shoulders in PS.
Lemme get back to you on that.
I feel like a dork replying to my own post, so I'm gonna stop now.
