DJ Shadow, the one that always does tunes with DJ Krush?!
Them two are the best trip hop DJ's out there, thats what is always spinning in my cd player. Meiso, Unkle, Ki-Oku, Milight...

Greetings,
Since we're talking about music... I want to share as well :-) I've already talked a little bit about music with Loki, but now I finally found more space and will put up more mp3s of mine tomorrow, for now only two are up, one is an intro other is a whole piece for now. I would really like to share the stuff with all you people. I do a lot of different genres but the few mp3s that are up now are self-taught orchestral, done with computer and a few synths and samplers. The address is:
http://hakl-hakl.si/voyager7/music
Sorry if this looks like a commercial, I'm not commercially oriented.. not now or yet at least, I really like to share music with people and am eager to hear what they have to say.
Now for the talking part: I am very much "into" melodic compositions, from orchestral over dnb to jazz (of course) to ethno and then to trance. My equipment consists of a few snyths, samplers, a keyboard and of course, a computer :-) It's equipment that's limiting me for now, when I upgrade I'm looking forward to faster improvement I assume.
Tech side : been playing piano since I was 8 or so (13 years now) had 6 years of formal training then a year private and then self taught, that led me to improvisation. Around a year ago I found out I'm interested in classical western style orchestration so I'm going to be learning that for a while, I am self taught in that area so far but I am thinking about some formal training, any recommendations? I try to keep my things simple, it's easy to complicate, it's harder to keep a simple story grooving as I have learned over years.
Take care and farewell,
voyager7

Hello Voyager7,
There are plenty of options open to you. Depending on how you want to go about it.I don't know what the extent of you musical training is so I'll just give you some suggestions. If you plan on taking courses, you may want to take classes on four-part writing which will give you a strong structure in basic harmonization, anything on music theory, and any classes on Orchestration or intstrumentation, counterpoint is always good to learn as well, and some music analysis classes.
The four-part writing will help by giving you structure to harmonization of a melody. Music theory gives you the possibilities melodically(melody), harmonically(chordal), rhythmically and much more. Counterpoint helps with writing multiple melodies( listen to any Bach for this he was the master of it).Music analysis will help build your ear as well as you compositional skills by analyzing what the great masters did in composition and why,how and when. Orchestration gives you a basic knowledge of how every orchecstral instrument is played, therefore showing you the capabilities and limitations of each.
If you are looking for self study there are several books I would recommend:
Anything by Walter Piston he is like the Loomis of music books. Harmony, counterpoint, and Orchestration are three books he wrote. They are the staple books used by most colleges.
They study of Orchestration. Adler
Principles of Orchestration. Rimsky-Korsakov
Anthology of music Analysis. Burkhart
There is a great deal of good literature on music out there these are just a few, and since I don't have Freds Stamina for typing that's all I'll put for now...if you want more or have any questions e-mail me!
Good Luck!! |

hey , man are there a talented bunch of guys on this forum !
I havent been playing guitar for nearly as long as most of you guys ( about 4 yrs ) on and off.
Love the jazz and classical tunes.
I cannot believe you ( fred flick stone ) know DJ Shadow , I used to tear that guys music apart, trying to figure out all the movies that he samples.
I love the Qbert remix of his tunes.
as far a guitarists go , what to you think of that man TUCK ANDRESS , he seriously , seriously freaks me out.

Ozenzo, sorry, i totally forgot that i posted in this thread.
I trade emails with jason's girlfriend every now and then to see what's new with him.. and sometimes he updates his site 'n stuff. he's had some tough times in the hospital, being told that we would probably die, but he got through it all and now depends on a eye movement system for communicating. as far as i know he can only make facial expressions and bend his thumb :\
the dude has a lot of faith tho.. it's pretty amazing.
go pick up perpetual burn, it'll blow your mind :P |

nice music loki, i wish i could learn to do that stuff
but i think you encoded the mp3 in a screwed up way. the kbs changes from 160 to 192 to 128 etc.
i've seen that in a few songs i've downloaded |

mr easy-TUCK ANDRESS rules!! The guy is the best!! I wish he would do more solo albums, cuase I think that his wife is a mediocre singer ,although he doesn't think so. Maybe Love is deaf as well....just kidding. His album Reckless Precision is by far the best guitar cd I've bought. Anyone who plays guitar and hasn't heard that cd should go out and buy it.
Jeezus-I'm sorry to hear about Jason, he definatley had a bright future in the music world ahead of him, I heard he did a cd after Perpetual burn, right after he was diagnosed, did that ever go anywhere? Was it any good?

It's not screwed up, Tsunami, it's called variable bit rate (VBR) encoding. It's a more space-efficient compression method. |

yeah, it was called perpective.. and it had some REALLY well written music on there. had some old stuff of his and a song written by him and playing by michael lee firkins.
then he released another cd called 'the raspberry jams' that had a bunch of old and short recordings of his.. but it didnt really compare to perp. burn or perpective. |
