Hey guys. Did these mainly for proximo and anyone else interested in Industrial Design style concept art. I have 5 more of these; but they need to be markered (I watch too much TV instead of drawing).
Anyways, these were fun to do. Haven't really drawn spaceship related stuff for a while. You always learn something new each time tho.
After this batch, i want to put these designs into environments and paint'em up (especially after seeing those cool hanger pics by franics and spooge...drool). I'm finally upgrading my computer so i can paint at home! =) Weee...
I'll post the others soon....
This is how the line drawing looks. It's also the original paper color. Now i notice some bad linework on the two guns...i should be able to fix that during render time....blah..

Honest, These designs looks incredible good.
It gives a special feel to it when drawn on a coloured, darker paper too.Whatis it for, by the way?
Well, gonna go home to practice some more..
Keep up the good work

WOW Vortx, those are really slick. you are so very very good at this.
Do you think you could put up some initial marker sketches. I've been very interestd in this technique after seeing your work and reading that stuff on Doug chiang's site. but I am having trouble getting my head around the initial sketch.
I was also wondering whether you do most of this stuff freehand, or with drawing aides such as curves etc. just curious.
Some of those designs are friken awsome.

Feng-amazing stuff here. THese rock. How long does each one of these take you? And are you in the frame of mind that you have a specific idea, or is the idea happening as you are working out the shapes? Amazing stuff...great post... |

Hey Feng!
Great work! Very tight sketches, I like them! I particularily like the last two, which show some nice form development without being as overburdened by "greeblies". Pretty good job of freehanding your ellipses too! i also like the way you've punched up just a few highlights to make your details sing.
Coincidentally, I bought a recycled-paper sketchbook about a month ago and have started doing sketches on the colored paper. Liking the effect, maybe I'll post some. |

sweet jesus!
These are so awesome, I wish I knew the secrets of industrial design :P
What should one practice in their drawings if they wanted to become a industrial designer?

Incredible stuff... Looks so good, vivid yet perfectly controlled in its 3-dimensionality. I honestly don't have a clue as to how you industrial design people do this (not that most are as good as you, I suspect.. or maybe hope ).

Vortx: Yep, I'm really impressed not only by the ideas but in the execution of the geometry, keeping everything in good perspective, even with the rounded shapes, very tough, but done to perfection here. My respect goes to you. |

Man, my computer crapped out on me after lunch. Finally got it back up again.....
Proximo, glad to help you out. Don't forget, keep looking at "making of" books, especially the star wars ones. Have you seen the 5th Element one? It's all written in french, but nice concept art. One of my favorite books.
Micke, these are not for any projects. Just drew'em for fun.
Rinaldo and Fred, i generally have a good idea of the design in my head before i commite to paper. Although i do a lot of thumbnailing to get the view i want. I'll post a sample sheet tomorrow, you'll see what i mean. But when i marker w/ the #0, i just rough out the general design and make sure the perspective is correct. All the details are added as i ink.
I get a lot of "looks like Doug Chiang." It's weird, cuz it does look a lot like it. But we come from the same background, and we're just using the "ID" style.....so no surprise. Tho we use very similar design forms....=)
Anyways, thanx for the compliments guys. WacoMonkey got me all inspired w/ those bike sketches. Thanx dude....

MrBrian: learn the fundamentals of perspective, and how to indicate and render basic forms in various lighting conditions. More complex form development is merely an elaboration and combination of those basic shapes.
A tip for freehanding ellipses is to align your arm along the minor axis before drawing the ellipse.
These things will help you understand how to (ultimately) draw an object from any angle under any lighting condition. If you actually want to pursue ID then that's another matter - drawing is just part of the equation. |

OK vortx, start writing up those tutorials on machinery, perspective and mechanical design layouts for all of the jealous folk (myself included!) and then maybe.. MAYBE, we'll let you live.

feng! Awesome stuff. How are you making the white highlights in these sketches? White pencil in your sketchbook or afterwards in Photoshop? Either way, these are really cool images. Hope you have your own web page soon.

Hey guys.
To Answer some of the questions:
These took about 2 hours each. 15-30 minutes on the marker sketch, the rest inking and markering. The white you see are added w/ a white prisma color pencil. You can also use white gauche for some extra punch. Since these are simi loose (and personal work), i let a lot of mistakes go. But typically, i try not to take too long on a concept sketch...or it's not a concept sketch anymore =)
I look at a lot of "making of" books for inspiration and techniques. Also take a look at Doug Chiang's web site. He has a studio tip section that shows you how to marker sketch.
I also sketch a lot of thumbnails to get my ideas onto paper. Here's a sample sheet....be loose and quick, this is for yourself, not the art director, so don't be afraid to try new designs and forms. Hope this helps =)
Proximo, how's the ships coming? Post them soon....
See the thumbnail for that insect vehicle? The grid i draw helps me to redraw it onto bigger paper...

oh btw, Cos, i'm 23..=P

Feng - REALLY like the thumbnail page - very cool. I like the loose style, and there are a lot of good ideas on there. What is that, a big sheet of canson, or are you working really small in a sketchbook? |

Thanx Wacomonkey! I love doing thumbnails. Cuz when you run out of ideas for something, you can always look at your big pile of thumbnails and get new ideas.
These were all done on 8x11 sheets. The paper i use is not canson, but something i buy from a place called Kelly Paper. It's called confetti or something like that. And comes in many different colors. About 20 bux for 500 sheets. They have a nice grip and very forgiving for pens...and doesn't soak up too much marker. But they are a lot thinner than your recycle sketchbook paper...
Hey WacoMonkey, scan in more of your stuff! I wanna see.....did i tell you i love concept stuff? hehe..

I'm betting he uses Prisma's ..
Anyway, these sketches are incredible. We see a ton of great artwork through these forums every day, but for some reason these have *REALLY* impressed me. I love this kinda thing =D~~
Do you have a website Vortx? .. And in a post above you mentioned Doug Chiang's web page -- what's the URL?
Anyway, keep up the great work, I gotta go mop up all this drool.

Yeah, these were done w/ Prismas - Cool grays. I also like AD Markers, but they are toxic, eek!
Thanx Humanclay. No, i have no website, mainly cuz i can't show most of the stuff i work on (draw backs to concept art - companies hold all the rights, even the designs they didn't use). But as i do more of these personal drawings, i might get one up =) Tho there probably won't be any domain names left...haha. www.badbrush.com?? hehe..that's probably taken too...
Doug Chiang's site is http://www.dchiang.com

How many different markers do you use for these? Just one shade using different pressures to darken it, or separate light and dark markers? |
