My bad habits:

- not using reference.. ever.
- designing too quickly and misplanning the pic
- thinking that I know what I'm doing, being too "techy" instead of "loose".
- don't spend as much time as I use to and should analysing other's images and art.

my worst habit is that i very seldom finish pics, just makes half the image and then just drop it.. or make half the image, saves it and newer continue drawing on it...

well thats a bad habit.. and i recomend all to finish their pics, even if you thinks it look like shit

I know what Frost means about the tetchy thing. That's why spooge can spend 5 mins on a pic that takes people like me 2 hrs, he he.

So...

1) Too tetchy.
2) Too interested in using Photoshop like my old airbrush.
3) Often no perspective guidelines when starting pics.
4) Sometimes too interested in imitating Roger Dean / Rodney Matthews than developing my own style.
5) Use the blend tool too often.

i have the same problems as frost and zarck.

-i always work on drawings section by section, i block in a little area that worry too much about detail in that area
-im too worried about intricate details then the "feel" or base to it.
-halfway or 75% into an image i always get bored and get some other idea in my head for another painting, and i drop the image and go for the other thing

Additionally - getting too bored too soon with an image, thus not finishing it really tightly (sometimes I want to).

* poor choice of subject matter

* the avoidance of anything character related, because I suck at it, instead of accepting the challenge and jumping right into it.

* always the same stupid sunset colors

* not being thourough enough in my preparations

He he, Frost, that's exactly like me! I really should be using more reference.
Another thing with me is that i'm too inpatient when doing something. I sit a couple of hours and i'm bored with the
picture.And, oh...I rarely do any backgrounds either, i don't know why...
I also choose really ugly colours-not good.

-Smoking
and not completing my sketches and designs.
just tossin' em away and starting fresh again.

People will tell me they are amazing, but I can't stand to look at them. (bad habit? mental instability?)

My bad habits:

- No understanding of anatomy, lack of motivation to study it

- Undeveloped drawing skills

- Floating rocks

- No understanding of perspective, very limited 3-dimensional visualisation skills overall

- Repeating the same handful of "tested and true conventions" (read: clich�s)

- Not detailing anything anymore, even when it's direly needed

And so on... Consequently, the range of things I can paint from my head is quite limited, and that really annoys me.

But my worst habit, from which many of the other ones stem, is general lazyness. Other people do daily figure drawing exercises, practise visualising basic objects, paint 20-minute paintings from reference - generally work hard to improve themselves. I just watch old movies and read magazines most of my freetime. I feel that I'm too much of a conformist to be a truly creative or artistic person

besisdes lack of skill in certain areas, my greatest flaw is when i'm working on an image i get jumbled up on which areas to detail or quickly sketch in and move on. It's almost like i can't work on an image that isn't the same level of detail usniversally throughout the image. i know its weird, i'll get over it sometime

1. I may get an idea for something that I may want to do but never start.

2. Too caught up in the act of rendering.

3. Rarely ever finish anything, unless work related.

I sleep too much, its like drinking, when I get stressed out I go sleep it off.

Interesting thread - good to give yourself a bit of self-analysis from time to time.

Lets see;

. Don't practice enough.

. Find it very difficult to "start" (once started I can't stop though).

. Copy other peoples styles rather than trying to develop one of my own that I like.

. I spend too much on art books (a recent count totalled the set to almost US$10000).

. Even when copying the image usually still ends up looking like my work somehow (annoying).

. I analyze art too much. I like to understand why something works, or doesn't, but I could probably gain the same understanding faster if I drew more and learned first hand.

. My Spooge art directory is 46meg. Why is that bad? Well I've set aside 100meg for it and it's not filling up fast enough.

. I need to get form in with fewer lines. Be more positive instead of using tons of lines to get it right.

. Have lots of cool ideas for images that I never get around to doing.

but the one that annoys me the most is i can't put most of my ideas onto paper. i have this fantastic image in my mind, then when i try to stick it on paper, it looks like crap.

I am getting better at shape design, digital has helped me with this.

I have not drawn from the figure as much as i would have liked to over the years. i am fixing this now. From life do all blessings flow.

I need to learn anatomy as well as I know mechanical objects.

I get bored with a pic once the basic design problem is solved.

I get too fast from the top and my club gets outside the line and I will pull-hook under pressure. Wait...that's golf.

I don't answer my email. I feel very bad about that.

Of course I would need to get better at everything else as well. Always new stuff to learn. But hey, that's the great part with being an artist, you can never learn enough

Hmmm... bad habits I haven't gotten rid of.

1) I still have a have a right hand arc going through some of my drawings. The characters would have a slight bend to them following the sweeping arc of my right hand. Sometimes I catch it, sometimes I do not.

2 & 3) Sometimes I draw heads first, or I draw bodies first, when I should drawing the whole person at once. What tends to happen when I draw one or the other is either the body hangs off the head as though it was in a noose, or a decaptitated head was stuck on top a headless body.

my bad habit, is I keep coming to work, I don't have enough balls to break the cycle and persue soemthing more interesting. No, just kidding.

I have to learn to stop noodling things so much, become more free with the medium (digital and traditional).

I have to use a stronger foundation, when composing make better use of shape designs.

I have to work on more technical imagery.

Hopefully, in the future we could all look back at our bad habits and see if we corrected them!!!!

I am glad to see you respond in such a large number :-) I recognized most of stuff concerning me, concerns almost everybody else as well but I did not quite consider all of them bad habbits... it's more of a personality, lifestyle issue (painting as a hobby or work, big difference).

My list is this:
- lacking persistence/time to finish a painting/composition(music)
- starting on one part, detailing it and forgetting about everything else, then going back to it.
- many short strokes to get the shape I want :-(
- can't do a freehand near perfect circle :-) so I try to avoid when necessary
- technical stuff interfering with my realization of the idea I just got, rendering the idea almost obsolete since I get involved with the problem of how to realize that - rational side of the brain kicks in and shuts down the creative one :-( Practice is solution for that I assume, practice until you stop *thinking* about what you're doing. I just can't spare the time right now :/
- can't read bass clef notation (left hand-piano) as fast as treble clef (right hand) :-/
- I don't service my motorcycle often enough :/

- I use UNDO in PS & Painter so often I practically keep my left hand on ctrl and Z most of the time :/ now that's an ugly habbit.

Just a thought - perhaps we should start suggesting solutions? How to get bolder and get rid of hanging on ctrl-z, etc

Alright... Danny's bad habits would be..

-I keep upping the resolution of pictures I'm working on. Resulting in images that are too damn big.
-I tend to plan images too much in my head without doing enough sketches, colour schemes, layouts etc. etc.
-My attention to detail can sometimes drown me, taking too much time.
-I'm too easily inspired by.. well.. ANYTHING. Hence the big pile up of ideas in my brain. Don't know if this is bad or not.
-I'm extremely absolute. I want everything in my work to be correct everywhere.. a perfectionist. Does get in the way sometimes...
-I have trouble painting roughness/dirty surfaces.
-I'm sometimes too lazy to make backups.. OUCH.. that can really hurt.. :/

and last but not least... I draw too much chicks..

One of my worst habbits is totally changing an element of the picture because of an accidental stroke or something that appeals to more than the original plan. This could be looked at as a good thing, i guess.. but i'd much rather be able to go through with the image i have set in my head instead of wandering off into something totally different.

Also, after working with my image for a long time i think i lose perspective and dont understand what looks good anymore. I'll do something that impresses me for a moment and then think that i shouldnt touch it.. tho i'm sure it could be improved upon.

Myyyy bad habits aaaaaare..

- Detailing.. suck at it. Usually I just leave it in its very rough state, but I am starting to get better in this area
- not using reference enough
- EXTREMELY unpatient. If I do not get something neat in less then a hour, I get lazy and just starts to scribble it, or just leave it in its rough state and it turns out like poo. I really have to sit down and carefully think through what I am going to paint etc, and plan it.
- Tend to rely more on "rules" when it comes to characters, then on my own judgement, which tend to make the proportions all wrong.
- All my characters tend to end up looking stiff.
- Bad knowledge about perspective.
- Lack of detailing comes with lack of knowledge how things look. I need to study reference more.. again!
