In the vein of the Arthur quick paintings, since I'm still having fun with this fast sketch technique. Hopefully I'm not cultivating new bad habits.

hiya Francis. I thought your last knight pic in the Arthur thread was really good. these are not quite as good but I really like them. you might want to show them a bit smaller. when I have a look from way back they look a lot better.
I have noticed that you use very scratchy strokes with a low opacity as opposed to more solid strokes. Is this by choice? it's just that your pencil sketches are so consise and perfect, yet the way you do these is very sketchy. I would't nessecarily call it loose becase there is a slightly overworked feel to it.
I don't mean to sound like I don't like it, I'm just interestd it the whole technique issue.

Rinaldo, those are good comments. I'm not really thrilled with these either, but I'm still interested in trying out different techniques. I was going for the quick sketch feel, but as you said it's getting a little overworked. I used the regular round brushes for these, with the pressure set to opacity. Size and color I leave unchecked. Spooge had some useful comments in his mini tute post about cutting shapes out so that you don't have that tell tale round brush shape in the painting. I gotta pay more attention to stuff like that.

Francis, yes, I can see exactly the size brush you used.
Try several different approaches in the same painting. The top image is crying for a few harder edges. paint a bit with the size option checked, so your stokes will have a taper. Play with variety in shapes.
Example, the fold in the elbow are all the same size. Vary that, and the stacking of the folds as they come closer, overlapping
I know it's a lot to think about, but you get better as you do more. Like playing a piano, try to do that by reasoning through every note ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |
