I finally finished this (for those that
remember my initial post). Thanks
for the crits back then, and I would
certainly appreciate any and all
crits now! It has been a great exercise
in PS 5.5 (my first completion, at least)
Anyway, I figure this is a depiction
of Race Bannon. Before his Johnny Quest fame
as the all around, quintessential kung fu
bad ass, stunt pilot, and weapons expert
he was just a grunt in the 1st Infantry
Division. Who could know! Of course,
this could also be a scene with Lee Marvin
that never made it to the final screening
of the BIG RED ONE.....hhmmmm but there
are no documented incidents of Marvin and
Bannon being seen together......
I really have enjoyed all the stuff
showing up on the boards, and I never stop
learning here. Thanks, everyone!

Wow - those dudes are in trouble, with THAT barrel aiming their way ...
Craig - dunno if you want this, but, I'd emphasize a little bit more in the light. You painted shadows allright, but if the light's coming from the left, then I'd make the wall on the left darker. And so on and so on. It will help giving your image some depth, which right now is pretty much missing from it.
Also - what about haze/smoke - helps gettings depth too and would be really cool in a combat/war setting like that ...
Alright - go for it! |

I remember this drawing! Like the color scheme...
As far as crits, what Loki said. Having your values fade as they recede into the distance will help with the perception of depth - something called aerial or atmospheric perspective, one of the things which Craig Mullins (spooge demon) is really good at. One other thing, which is a tip I got from Fred recently is to pay attention to the direction of your "brushstrokes," since they can either hurt or help your image. In your version, your strokes don't seem to have much relationship to the direction of the planes in the image, and so they are fighting the drawing (in particular, on the wall on the right). Related to that, your detail should scale down as the objects get further away, i.e., smaller or finer brushstrokes for the buildings in the background.
I did a quickie repaint of this to try to show some of the things I mentioned. This isn't the greatest rework, and I'm thinking (hoping) that some other more experienced painters here will correct some of my misinformation. Anyway, hope it's helpful. Let's see more soon.

Craig,
I too love Tigger tanks, esp tiger 1. Very brutal looking thing.
I haven't tried to draw one since I was about 15(!) I was surprised how much I could remember. The forms are very simple.
I REALLY like you drawing, but not for the reasons you might imagine. It reminds me of a very well done pastel. The surface breathes and moves, with thick rich strathmore cotton paper showing through like wet nip... How old are you? never mind.
Your picture may flatten out a bit because of this, but I like that aspect. The stroke that does not follow the form and lays on the surface is really nice. It will be even better once you learn a little more about value and color, but that will come.
What I did was something for me as much as you, that is why I changed things around so much. Hope you don't mind. It is a little squashed intentionally. Just an experiment.

Oh my. Spooge that's incredible. I'm speechless. I was about to go to sleep and then I saw this...
Craig - I remember the orginal sketch and I really liked it. (I remember it flipped though) Can you post it? I found the orginal thread, but the pic didn't load.

Hey guys! Holy cow!
Loki, I think you are right on...thank you!
Francis, as usual you are the man. You
captured what I would have liked to....
I think I will do some rework. Thank you!
Spooge, WOW! Your cut on the action
sequence is better. The guy is
just picking his buddy up....realistically
the two guys in my pic probably wouldn't
make it as far as they did...Anyway, I love
what you did, and thank you! I am just
about to hit the big 30 (oh, god, next month
in fact....how time does fly!)
pimento, Yes, I did flip it, and I will
repost (i deleted the old one from the
webspace.....numbnutz me replaced the old
file with the new one!)... |

pimento, and other interested parties....
this was the pencil that I colored, it is not
the first thing I posted....I can come up
with that if desired. I flipped it after
several hours of work and was surprised
by the change in feeling of action.....it was
wierd...anyway, I stuck with it.
Thanks, everyone for your responses....
any other thoughts, crits, pics, whatever,
are welcome!!!
peace, c |

Craig: nice going. But, personaly I like your sketch more than the colored on. More contrast and easier to see what is what. And, also, because it's more contrast I guess it looks more dramatic as well.
Try to keep some of than when coloring the image. Francis illustrated this very well.
Spooge: Holy fuck ! Your are just too good to be true.

Hey glad you like it. It took about an hour. I really try to keep the sketches I do here to that length. It forces me to stay with what is important and to simplify.
I just noticed I left out the machine gun in the hull. And Tigers did not have driving lights. bad.
*back from bookshelf* Last nightI was proud of my memory of the tank's anatomy. I wasn't even close. This pic could have been a lot nicer if I had taken a minute to check it out. That is just stupid. How often is there no ref, and then when there is, I am too lazy to use it. bad.

Oh my god, that's incredible spooge. How old are u and stuff? What's your experinece??
That pose is incredible, it looks like that soldier is Reeeel concerned about that tank and the setting looks very WW ish. As for the orignial one, yeah, shadows important, give it depth, and the guy doesnt look too concerned about the tank.

Amazing spooge, I went through all your pictures, and website, head to toe. amazing. Hows your financial life? I was just wondering because it seems that there is a comman interpretation going around that all artists are poor. |

I think 36 is quite old enough
I hope to retire by 50. Then I paint what I want the way I want.
I had a teacher tell me that said income is directly related to ability to draw. I have found this to be true, once you throw out some other complicated issues, like laziness.
edit- Rinaldo, if you are there, you asked that I post full rez images of some stuff. i have in a few cases, but I really want to keep a grip on that stuff, as it may have value for a book or something. It is depressing to see the jpgs on my site, they are pretty slim. And I think I have to go back and fix the mac/PC gamma problem, as 99 percent of the people surfing by are PC, and my crap is too dark as it is.

I understand Spooge. You've done so much already I feel greedy asking for stuff like that. I've just always wanted to see one of your ultra detailed pics in full res. But like I said, I understand. And if you ever did do a book you know I'd buy it
Thanks for responding anyway.
