Ok I was reading through my photoshop 5 bible by Deke McClelland and it discribed a methos for getting an even fade between layers it says "he added gradient layer masks to both layers to create even fades." Yeah sure fine but how the hell do you do one of those, please someone explain.

Click add layer button on the appropriate layer. Hit G (gradient) and make sure it's set to black and white for front and back colours. Set to 100% opacity, select the layer mask and drag your gradient line in the mask according to how you want the gradient to flow. Done..

Good explanation except for a typo: He meant to click add mask, not add layer, on the appropriate layer.

Yeah, I think he was talking about add layer mask like Sushi mentioned.
Here is a way to try it.

Load the selection for a layer.
select LAYER/ADD LAYER MASK/REVEAL ALL.
photoshop will automaticly select your gradiant tool for you.
Once you apply the gradiant you'll see it happen in the layer mask. The layermask can be edited as many times as you want, and it truly doesn't effect the layer untill you apply it. to apply it just drag the layermask icon in your layers pallet to the trash, photoshop will ask you what you want to do next.
good luck.
