I like the gamma on macs better. I like the interface - less technical. Easy and multiple ways to do things. And the error messages, while not exactly helpful, aren't cryptic. I like the peripheral interaction and the cursor movement better. And now the mac boxes look better And I grew up with an Apple IIe
All that stuff is nitpicky; it's really just a gut feeling on my part and a matter of personal prepherance. Spooge claims (and I'm paraphrasing here) that Photoshop handles large pics better on a macintosh, but besides that he'd rather use a PC.

they're basicaly the same so far as the interface goes. double click to open etc. I disagree that macs are more user friendly. Maybe alittle bit, but the damn things crash if you look at them. I like the interface in win2k a LOT it has a whole buch of things that Mac os doesn't. os X is going to become a bit better in this reguard but you will have to wait. Mac is the industry standard for graphics. Photoshop runs faster on a mac as do other design based programs.
A lot of it is about ease of buying. Desgners don't know a lot about computers but they need to use them. If you buy a mac you don't have to worry because you will get quality parts and everthing will work (supposedly anyway, my mac crashed 5 miniuts after I got it and It was totaly fucked, had to get a replacement ). It's tradition as well, they were what everyone used for graphics in the first place. probably because they came with GIs first and people who do graphics want that. But photoshop does run faster.
Don't know why I'm writing this. Boring question.

Its six of one and half dozen of the other (I really like that expression and use it every chance I get). But really, Doesn't it depend on the moment, ie new features, faster cpu and the like. Personally I like Macs but it doesn't really matter. If I use a PC long enough then my opinion would probably change.

ohh..And I HATE (I wanna put that in 72 point but I can only get uppercase) the trash thing on MACs. I just want to press delete. I've lost so much stuff acsidently from draging stuuf around the desktop and not noticing that it went in the trash. Very messy when you want to clean the HD. millions of open windows ARRRGHHHHHHHH......Drag and drop ARRRGHHHHHHH..........
I want my delete button. |

my mac at work hid 6 gigs of files from me becaues it kept crashing and made backups of my harddrive multiple times...but becaues macs hide what you "DONT NEED TO KNOW FROM YOU" I had to reformat my hard drive |

Well the mac gui is significantly better than anything from microsoft, and the os itself has traditionally been better than windos.
When it comes to graphics specifically, it boils down to which os will give you the desired result more quickly, efficiently etc.
Photoshop currently runs faster on macs, although some people claim it is less stable.(personally i've found it to be completely stable on my mac)
When it comes to 3d packages, windos has a much larger/better selection.
I think it's silly to claim that one os is inherently better for graphics, and it always will be. That is, until MacosX comes along

I believe this is a quote from Murphy's Law of Computers (how official this is, I have no idea):
"If you make a computer a fool can use, only fools will use it."
I like my PC for the very fact that Windows gives me a lot of bullshit. It keeps it interesting, kinda like a street rod or project car.. if they always worked perfectly, then they wouldn't be much fun to work on.
However, this is why many people dont drive street rods.. a) they are expensive, and b) they're a toy and break down. I see pc's as that toy, somewhat, but I still do my graphic work and all that on one. Photoshop doesnt crash to often on me, and I get by explorer being a memory hog by using Litestep or some other shell variant.
I've considered switching over to Win2000, to anyone who runs it, does it help increase performance with Photoshop and other graphic programs?

Oh god, not another one of these threads :P
I run both a mac and a PC, and I like using them both. I must admit, though, that I must be very lucky. All the windows people say MacOS is unstable, but I've run my ibook (OS 9) for a week and a half (always on), using it for work without it crashing once!
I even got pissed off when I came back to the PC for some large scale gfx work (it's got a bigger monitor), and forgot that I had to save every ten minutes under win! Eek.
Mind you, I've probs only got myself to blame - I'm still running 95 on the PC...
Anyway, my take on this debate is that neither machine is inherently better for gfx than the other. I can go out and buy a top flight G4 with a nice cinema display and run a graphics department with it, or I can get a big-ass 1GHz PC with stacks of top-flight specs, and it'll do basically the same job.
In the spirit of the street rod analogy, it's like having a sony fm radio, or a specialist built ham radio. The ham radio gives you all the access you need, so you can tweak it to death and pick up all you want, but if all you want to do is listen to Jazz FM, what's the point?
Oh, and in direct answer to the initial question... I think Rinaldo's right when he says it's mainly tradition that macs are design machines. Photoshop only used to be available for them, but these days it's all just down to personal taste.
If you want to know the REAL answer to this question Daz, I would say try them both and see what you think. I know you say you hate macs, but when I say "use them both", I mean for the same amount of time, and for similar stuff. The reason you "hate macs" is probably just cos it does things differently. I reckon if everyone stuck with the MacOS, instead of dismissing it altogether after using it for three seconds, they'd realise that the differences are mainly aesthetic, and we'd see a lot less threads like this one
Anyway, that's my two quid's worth. If you managed to read all that, well done!

i agree with u i probably hate mac's because i'm not used to them i guess...but mac's are easier to use, but then pc's are probably better for advanced users..and aquamire i totally agree with you and i like to fix problems with windows hehe it gives you experience..
ok thanx everyone |

well.. dont think its a big different between macos and win.. both are oses that you dont have to think much to use.. (even doe win can cause some strange shit to happen ) but i guess macos can cause its problems too..
one fact is that you get a realy good pc for the money that a avarage mac cost.
and then its easier to get your hands on some programs that you as a private person never would afford... (like photoshop, 3dmax)
(unless all your friends uses mac (like that would happen ))
hmm.. but if you realy want userfriendly, then amiga is it |

macs are more user friendly and are graphicly oriented with the drag and drop options....now windows (witch I do prefer) you have to program....ie with macs you want to open a file in a certain program you drag the file on to the icon....with pc's you have to hold down the shift kee and open with and select what you want to open....and so on |

this is just what think: IBMs are good for 3D stuff and games like hafelife.(hafe life was going to be on the mac but....it was scraped)
But for graphics it is mac all the way.
But after OS 6.5 it went a bit "funny" but i heard that MAC OS 10 will be a lot better
P.S. I got LC475(slow,like a"486")
a 14k modem(very sad)
and my external 4speed CD drive
BUT it still works fine with Photoshop
FREEZEs on some web pages. |

i cant agree... mac used to be better on gfx and amigas used to be the best computer in the world.. but that was a long time ago.
the intelbased computers have evolved alot.
so the different doesnt excist any longer..
the different could be if the mac was more stable than the pc.. but it doesnt seeme to be the case either...
only reason to buy a mac is if you couldnt live with any other os than macOS.
well thats just what i think... |

Rinaldo: Just a quick tip if you've got OS 9. Try Command Delete. that's like the Best thing they've added to the OS in years and years.
emirin: next time that happens try doing a search for "temp" with Sherlock or FindFile(whatever you use) and then just drag all the Photoshop temp files to the trash. I freed up 2 fucking gigs the first time I figured that one out.
I like Macs Cause apples taste good.
Windows mean sun and that means glare on my monitor. Yeucky. |
