I think this needs some secondary figures behind Arthur. His silhouette is too strong.

In answer to some of the questions form the other thread, no reference being used. I am playin quite a bit with the opacity and size toggles, which I have never done before. It's mickes shapes that have gotten me to look more closely at comics and good design in general. Turning off the opacity toggle makes you commit to the shape. Don't try this at home

Shape design has always been one of my weaker areas I feel. The way to fix any weakness is to practice it until it is one of your strengths. Don't practice what you are already good at, I guess is the idea. Takes a lot of work.

Are you working on a King Aurthur project, or just inspired by the subject matter?

Id say that row of characters in the background could use one more layer of them in front of the already existing ones, with a bit more value pushed into them.

I love the color feel, and where you are taking the overall, color composition.

Is there an added ground in Aurthur? Very nice illusion of texture. Keep these coming, you are opening a big door for me with all this. Thank you again for all the hidden help you are giving. Really turning me into a different illustrator, I greatly appreciate everything you are saying and doing...

Man, have you taken some pill or something, do you sleep at all ??? It seem like you are really into your creative mood lately, or do you always do this much stuff ?
Please send some of those creative vibes over the atlantic, would you !

Anyway, great picture ! I'm also curious if you are working on some sort of King Arthur project. A game or movie, or is it personal stuff. It seem like you really enjoy this kind of work, with people, dramatic backgrounds and colors, more than painting matte stuff...?

OMFG *splutters for a few minutes*

*torn between wanting to stare at the pic for ever and wanting to draw some more, Rinaldo finaly suffers brain meltdown. The very last thing he is able to stammer out before he colapses on the floor is "B...Biger..Version....plea....."*

This has to be the best out of your recent sketch fetish. *I wet my pants* The colors are so amazing. And the redreally captures the blood and violence fromt the battle. I need a tablet!!!! I love the way you did his armor. Very different but it worked. Craig, I beg of you sir, give me more!

I really like this sort of stuff, particularly the previous Arthur image which demonstrated, quite succinctly, how it's possible to produce an image that is somehow "right", but with only small scattering of lines.

My digital art 'history' has (unfortunately) been largely rooted in "technique" over anything else and in the last year or so I've desperately been trying to develop the other side. The aim, I guess, is to reach that point where I can confidentally splash around a few strokes, with little reguard for the pixel perfect finish I used to go for, and end up with an image as strong as the Arthur sketch.

In the commercial work I've been doing recently I've actually started to feel it all coming together somewhat. Still need tons of practice though (those Speed Pics were a great start!).

Anyway, I hope Spoogey doesn't mind but I took his picture from above and, as a little exercise, had a go at trying to balance the image out a little more;

I originally had two extra figures roughed in but it felt a little foreground heavy so I finished it up with just the one. I think it works pretty well and adds to the feeling of story.

Very quick, about 15 mins.

Sumaleth

(Spooge; keep them coming! Esp. more like this one.)

Wow, nice way of adding in the lieutenant in spooge's great picture. It is positively creepy, it is giving me that "I've seen this somewhere before" feeling with the 2nd guy. Hmm....grr, now I'm gonna be thinking about that for the next hour or so. I keep dredging up in my mind some scene from some movie. Hmm....Willow. Aha! There we go, won't be thinking of it anymore, thanks!

Reminds me of the King Arthur from the movie Excaliber from the early 80s? I like this the best out of your more recent pics. Looks like you put more time into it. I like Sumaleth's idea, but I think a secondary character should be more shoulder to shoulder with Arthur. Perhaps Merlin to make it more recognizable?

Chapel; I put him back a bit because I wanted the sense that there's some great decision on Arthur's shoulders and the decision is his alone. His lieutenant stands back a pace or two, anxiously awaiting the king's decision but not wanting to intrude.

(sorry Spooge, I'm putting story into your picture! )

Sumaleth: To me it looks like he is in the middle of a battle and he is looking for what is to come next. I figured a secondary character should be at his side ready for battle. Besides.. it was a round table. I don't think Arthur gave commands. hehe

Look out spooge.. next we will be righting dialogue.

great addition sumaleth!

But somehow the appearance of the lieutenant does not give this "heavy feeling". I don't know what it is.. but somehow it does not looks like he has the same grave and sincere mood as arthur in the foreground.
Maybe its because he has his head tilted slightly to the side..

[edit] or maybe if he would be turned slightly into the direction arthur is looking to.. to give a feeling like he is "following" arthurs vision/line of thought etc.

Don't know really... better just ignore my babble.

i just LOVE the way the texture screams out at you, yet doesnt conflict with the tones that make the picture look so natural.
his armour definitely kicks ass. very well done.
sumaleths looks good, but i think i still prefer the original.

Oh my. Thats very nice, the sun shining through the flag is a great effect, really nice subtle color. A question and a request:

1) What fred said, you on an arthurian kick or is this for a project?

2) Could you mebbe post the full size of this, I may not see anything extra but I always like saving the full size of paintings I like for reference

Ok, here is the full size. It is 1280 wide, not that big. The original idea came from a black and white scribble. It is an interesting process. I think I will write this up for Immi's column. I just don't know what to write for that thing. There is stuff on the net and in books that does a much better job of explaining things than I ever could. Well this process is pretty unique. Not really, but adapted for digital tools

I dont have any project with King Arthur stuff right now, I just like the subject.

How about showing some bigger versions of your other stuff. I tend to be able to work out a lot of it just from looking.

But I've asked this about a million times so I suppose you have some reason for not doing so.

How about a "get lost ya whining little brat" at least it would be an answer:P

Gulp...that's amazing spooge man. But a coupla things (hehe im no great artist to critize you or anything but..) Your drawings prety much sweet as everyone else says.
it would be cooler or more dramatic to say if they shot was pulled further back and we could see the landscape, and the central figure standing there.

That way, the flags could also be more exposed, streching wide across the land with bodies kinda strewn here and there, and people helping others in the background.

Just a thought, nothing more. I just think its up too close
