Okay, I arsed up before (posted a five-minute sketch and asked for advice without even TRYING to do anything with it), but here it is...

This is really the first thing I've done in about two years, and the first pic I've kind of made an attempt at getting past the sketch stage on the PC.

Please rip it to shreds, particularly to give me pointers in making it less "flat"...

cheers peeps

hmmm..
things tend to get darker as they go off into the distance. Try reversing the tones you have now. Make the parts of the pistol that are furtherest away darker and the onces closest to us, lighter. Also try making the edges closest to us a little bit less sketchy,it will help add some more attention to the part thats in our face
I posted some stuff from one of Andrew Loomis's books about tone. Look it up, it has some good advice.

Hey, yeah, that's alot better!
What else do you want to do to it?
How about adding more detail now that you got your tones in?
good job

cheers.

dunno what I'm gonna do with it, if anything. I'm just trying to get back into drawing (to get ceenda off my back, if nothing else ), and this was just a sketch to try out the copy of Painter I just got hold of.

I think I might leave it, or refine it a bit... ach, who knows what time will bring?

Nice one JayBee!

You certainly demonstrate a good sense of perspective there. Not to mention a strong sense of persuasion.

Did you use a mouse to do this? I ask because you always talked about getting a tablet sometime. I can't determine how you could do this pic without a tablet though. If you read my previous rant, the PenPartner is pretty cool but an Intuous is better but more pricey.

Thanks all for the feedback

Masaccio - yeah, I think we've all got a cheesy "pointing gun at the viewer" pic hiding somewhere

They're just so much damn fun to draw!

Ceenda - I seem to remember you asking to borrow my tablet before you got yours...

Yeah, I used a Wacom pen partner - one of the older A6 ones. Nice bit of kit, especially when you throw it at Painter
