I threw this page of sketches up on Failsafe's 'fun-after-art' topic, since it seemed to follow the crotch-rocket theme, but... Looks like nobody's seen it buried in an old off-topic thread, so I'm reposting:

Just a page out of my sketchbook with a few silly 'hubless' bike designs...

Pretty much just pigment liner over grey mark. I finally have a temp site I can upload to, so expect more of this random crap to pop up from time to time! Let me know what you think...

Those are swell, WacoMonkey. What's your background? Same as Francis? Architecture, industrial design?

Wonder if you could post any of that old stuff from Buried in Time, or maybe some old Nissan Design stuff. That stuff is the shit, too.

Crazy designs. I love 'em Very elegant looking bikes.

Just out of pure curiosity, are all the highlights on those bikes created by the absence of marker/ink, or are you going back with white paint to touch it up? I'm interested in the process that goes into a lot of these marker renderings I see. I did look at Doug Chiang's demo, btw

Hey, thanks for the positive response, guys! I guess I'll post some more...

AliasMoze: Yeah, my background is ID. I went to the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, then got shanghai'd by Nissan Design in San Diego and ended up designing cars for 4 1/2 years. I guess it stuck.

burnOut: Yeah, the quicky sketches do get a little "bent", though actually the middle one bugs me the most. Ironically that's the only one I tightened up the ellipses with guides on, the other two are (obviously! ack!) freehand.

BooMStick: Nice to meet you to! Hope you can get out here more.

Manik: Yes, I try to leave the white of the paper as my highlights as much as possible, as if I was painting in Watercolor. I generally put a light tone to figure out where my cores will be, then marker dark to light with a handful of markers and a lot of wet-to-wet blending. You have to work very fast. I'll keep the highlights pure white until the end, then the last step is knocking them back with a light tone or color. Only a few small spots will remain pure white. There is no white paint on this image, just a couple of touches of white prisma pencil to highlight the tread on the tire.

If I'm doing a color image I will often come back in with prisma for highlights, but it usually doesn't look as good as when I plan my lighting better.

hey phil, great designs youve got there

anyways, i am 20 years old and am currently enrolled in an art course at sheridan college over here in oakville, i saw that you went to the OCA in toronto, just wanted to know what your thoughts were on this college, i really want to get into graphic or industrial design and am not sure wether or not to stay at sheridan or try to get into OCA. How hard was it for you to fidn a job after OCA? how long were you enrolled at OCA?

anways thats about all i want to know. thanks.

Muzman: what's Cyberpunk 2020? RPG?

Shane: Supposed to be looking at a monitor. Silly Idea.

leno: Sheridan's a good school, one of the best in the world for animation and CG. I didn't think they had ID. Graphic design is pretty useless if you're looking to do conceptual stuff. Take illo, ID or animation for sure. OCA used to be good, but I've heard that they've cut the ID department down a lot. Their illustration program is still the best in Canada as far as I know.

As for jobs out of school, I got lucky, I did a lot of freelance while in school and got hired by Nissan 6 months before graduating, so I was all set when I finished. A few of my friends who were at least as good as me haven't been as lucky. Canada's a tough market.

I went through the full program and got my diploma, though I started with advanced standing so I skipped first year & was only enrolled for three years.
