if they are different, is there anyone out there that has tried action half-life and counter-strike? which one is better?

1) You can download both AHL and CS and it will not mess anything up since its two different mods and are installed in 2 different folders doh

2) CS kicks AHL's major bum! Even though both mods' creationists were making hugely pop mod Action q2, CS has much more exciting gameplay with cool objectives like rescuing real hostages and the money system (!)

3) get CS and dont waste your time playing AHL
http://www.counter-strike.net
and yes i played both since im russian

CS wins in a contest, but why bother, I like 'em both. Just like q3a vs UT, just because you like one, doesn't mean you can't play the other. Besides Action HL doesn't cost anything, and isn't a huge download... And they are improving it with every upgrade.
ie. play both.

"Action" was the king of mods for Quake2. CS is in large part based on simillar ideas; teamplay, realistic weapons, location damage etc. AQ2 had some problems though, many thought the weapons were too powerful and needed to be changed. But there was also people who wanted more real guns
CS got around this by using the money system and allowing lots of armour. (and it has a pretty neat roleplay "cover me" style of game because of it)
When the "Action" team moved over to half life they still wanted to keep the fast paced feel of an action movie, but to keep location damage and real weapons they found it better to reduce the number of weapons.
So instead of trying to make an Arnie movie game and still be realistic (which is impossible) AHL is more like a hongkong action film; cramped spaces, pistols etc.
So it's become a completely different game from CS.
Try it, but don't get it yet; AHL Beta 3 should be out soon with such fun features as hand to hand combat (flying kicks, punches), dives, tumbles, the ability to lie flat on the ground or hug yourself against the wall really close.
It should be good.
I sound like a total pimp, but I'm an old timer and keen to see it do well.

I must agree with you Muzman. They're two seperate entities, and have their own style of gameplay and gripes. Actually, if I remember right, Gooseman was a major player in the development of Action Quake 2, and is still a major player on CounterStrike. As you said, Action tries to capture a movie style realistic, yet arcade style (I.E. shoot em up, no major objectives like the hostages, or bombs in CounterStrike) gameplay. They've both got their gripes though. Most everyone's biggest gripe with action is the falling damage, and it's one of mine too. Sometimes you can fall just a tad farther and be killed where the other fall would take a little bit of life from you. However, the damage system is great in the respect that if you shoot someone's leg, they limp and don't walk fast, etc etc. Counterstrike's location damage just isn't up to par with Action in my opinion, and some of the weapons try to be realistic, but the more they are tweaked, the farther they move from the realism. Of course, I'm a bit of a military nut and know all the real-world weapons backwards and forwards so that probably ruins some of my gameplay experience, oops

yeas, that's the trouble with real guns. They have millions poured into making them do their job; putting an enemy on the ground quickly and accurately.
Doesn't make for a fun game; (you'd find out pretty quick why the SAS and others train for as long as they do.)

Yeah, good point Muzman. No idea to make the game too realistic, it'll cease to be fun. For example if you fall or get shot in the legs, you don't just limp for a while and then start running again. The leg stays broken. A single bullet to the toe might even incapacitate a guy totally...
The thing is to find a balance between realism and "fun2, with AHL having an emphasis on the "fun2, and CS more on realism. I play both, dependeing on the mood I'm in.
