Ive been working on this character model for a little while now, and its my first real one, all done up nicely, and I'm having some problems with some polys I extruded from the torso.

These are supposed to comprise the abdomen, but for some reason no matter what I seem to do it wont smooth them out.

I used 3DS Max 3+ and started with a cylinder deformed to this shape.

check the normals

make individual smoothing groups for the faces

delete the faces, leave the vertices, then re-create the faces with the create polygon tool thingamajic

or just use Nendo..

Like faustgfx said, what you're looking for is the smoothing groups. If you're in Edit Mesh mode, go to "Polygon" mode, and scroll all the way to the bottom. You'll see this.

Any faces that you want smoothed to each other, put in the same smoothing group! Pretty easy, once you know where to look for it.

Nice model, incidentally.

Thanks, I already knew about the smoothing groups though. I believe Ive figured it out though.
What it turns out is, that for some reason when I extruded the poly's, I got duplicate vertecies, and because they were still visible poly's, but different vertecies, no matter how close they were to the other polygons, they still didnt share an edge, so the program wouldnt smooth them.

Now, Grooved, Smoothed, and Improved.

I figured out the problem, and fixed that, as well as making several other small changes(merging the head and the torso mesh), and am now starting work on the lower body.

When Im done Ill do up a render of the whole body, + one with all of his "gear" on, which Ive removed from these renders.
