er.. you can check out some tutorials... dhab's for instance.
Danny's right - DONT touch filters
maybe you should try to start with simple shapes, cubes...add lightning shadows, then move to more complex objects

the fuck are you talking about? burn/dodge tool is a Good Thing(tm)!
i draw with it almost as much as i draw with ms paint. paintbrush and airbrush stink.
