I'm referring to the book of the same title by Betty Edwards.
The general idea behind this book for those unfamiliar is that it teaches you to feel the shift of dominance between the left and right hemispheres of your brain. Right brain for art, Left hemisphere for symbols, verbal communications and whatnot.
I lost my artistic skills due to what I would consider heavy usage of the left hemisphere while studying sciences for the past 8 years. However, using this book, I'm finding that it is teaching me to see things as an artist does, as she says. After my first post yesterday, I went home and did some exercises from the book for the first time in several months, and I was very impressed with the results.
My question is, what do you guys think about the ideas presented in this book? How long do they remain useful? Anyone think that it's the wrong way to go about learning?
Curious,
-JeremyT

I read that book awhile ago, and I must say I did learn a lot from it. I've always had some artistic talent, but I was never able to really focus in on it, so half the time I would draw crap, the other half the time I might make something that looks somewhat good. The auther, Betty Edwards, was very correct in saying that the book will boost your confidence, and it did. Since reading that book my artistic skills have sharpened by at least 3 fold, and I continue to see myself improving everyday.
And as a note, I also got the followup to that book, called Drawing on the Artist Within. It's a more recent addition to the series, but I found it wasnt much different from the original, except so added techniques, but I would still recommend taking a looksie at it.
I hope this is some help to you, I know that book helped me.

What I find really interesting is Betty's description of what it's like when the R-side takes over. I experience the symptoms of not understanding what people say to you while you work, finding what you're looking at really fascinating, not really experiencing the passage of time, etc. I experience that all the time while doing lots of things, not just working with art. I've always referred to it as "getting into a groove" and never really assocated it with any particular type of activity.
Do others experience that while they're working? It that necessary?

Those chapters are f*cking boring, i skipped
lots of that shit coz many things are
repeated really offen. It starts
getting interesting when it comes to drawing
perspective, how to percieve forms and
draw faces. I practiced that alot.
Get some nude/porn pis and draw some anatomy
(which is not covered in the book) you'll
see the diference to what you drew befor.
ps, i'd really like to know if thats her
on the cover but i think not coz she was
talking about having students in the 80s so she must be really old and ugly... uarg!

Well, I'm still serious about discussing this, but I can't help but answer the question.
There you go. I can understand if the two of you want to be... alone for a while.
