Wow that's cool. Great colors. What was this for? Book cover? Just personal?

Damn, that is really good. Love the forms.

I would say it could use some softer edges, but, hey, I am only spittin in the wind at this point. Right?... ...nice job, looks and feels western...

Francis,

It was a personal thing. Here at work everything has to be super tight so I wanted to do something alittle looser and painterly. I also wanted to do something akin to what Spooge has done in his PS work. One of these weekends I'll come in and finish the thing before moving on to something else.

Fred,

I totally agree with you on the edge thing.
I'll take care of the edges as soon as I get time to refine the image.

Uhm...

Ain't that a portrait of Lee van Cleef?

(The Good The Bad and the Ugly, For A Few Dollars More.....(etc?)...)

A really great piece of art though!

Mergatroid, that is a damn moody pic. It has tons of atmosphere, the form and pose of that guy is exceptional...I think you hit it right on the head with the colors...The light brown dust, kind of orangish light outside in the southwestern U.S. right before dusk, etc. My hat is off to you sir...Fantastic job.

Hey Ken, do you have any ref that you were using? I could overlay or crit it without, but it would be better to have reference.

Spooge,

I do have reference but its pretty crappy and I really don't have a way to post unless you want me to e-mail it to you. I'd really appreciate it if you could crit it anyway.

Francis,

It's called "He enters ..." and kicks some mighty butt. Merga - please add the necessary comments yourself!

[Sidenote: Mergatroid paid me a huge ammount of money to put this on my site, so, unless you are the CEO of a huge Oilcompany or Microsoft, I doubt you'll be able to post on my site - hope you understand]

Loki,

Thanks soo much for posting my image and the checks in the mail.

Here are the stats:

Program: Photoshop 5.5
mode: RGB
Image Size: 10" x 6.75" @ 500dpi

I started as a small comp then I liked the way it was headed so I resed it up then began the laborious task of tightening up the image.

I not really into western stuff much either. This is my first try. It's what I could do without reference. Yes, email it to me and I will post it and maybe be of more help.

It is interesting that you did this to loosen up, but it still feels really "tight" to me. Loosen up! That is what is so great about digital so take full advantage. I also "loosened up" the pose a little, with the angle of the hips.

I got a bob peak 1984 olympic illustration book at a flea market. spooge! it is really neat learning what he thought was important and what he left out. All screwed together with masterful drawing. I hate those light burst things he did. His version of lensflares.

Both are great pics. Dare I say it.. I like Mergatroid's better, because it looks a little more authentic. The lighting in Spooge's is great, but the guy looks like he is wearing a big flowing cape.

Spooge,

Well you know what I mean by loosen up right? You know the knid of work we do here @ HCA, everything is tight, tight, tight but at least now I have something to compare to. Anyway, I found your interpretation really interesting and I liked your fuller range of values. The hotter light in the bkg was great and I'll try to incorporate it in to my own.

In general, I love all the comments I've been receiving and I hope to post more in the future along with the finished version of this cow puncher.

Spooge, what is there to say? You're awesome.

Interesting subject matter, because I'm getting ready to do some western stuff myself. These two paintings are great inspiraton.

Nice image mergatroid. It took a few glances before i realized it was done digitally.

I think spooges picture has more attitude, tho they're both very well done.

Ok, this might be considered sacrilege, but I didn't really like spooge's interpretation of it. Now I'm not much of one for western pictures either, but I did like Mergatroid's painting, especially the background behind the guy, those warm colours really attracted me. Spooge's while a bit more mmmmm moody I guess, just didn't strike me as quite right. Looking at the guy it makes me think of a civil war soldier for the south instead of a cowboy out west. Some combination of the hat and the shirt he's got on is doing that for me. Mmmm actually especially the hat for some inane reason. Plus the belt and bullets in it kind of glare out at me. I dunno. I'll shut up now before someone kills me with a thrown boot.

I'm really noticing a trend. If you compare the images like Merg's here, or Fred's version of the lilies or of my desert bazaar pic, with Spooge's versions, the biggest difference is the range of values. Spooge's are more photographic, others are more like traditional paintings. I think that's where Spoogey uses the advantages of the computer-it's easier to get such a range in one painting, whereas we plebes struggle along acting like we're using real media.
