Why can't I get anything done before 2:00AM?

Ok, so I was scribbling in photoshop and decided to take a stab at a human head in perspective (hmm. that sounds odd-scratch that ). I'm still relatively unexperienced when it comes to figures, so I can't tell what's wrong on this sketch. Also, it's my own so its harder to critique. So have at it, tear me apart. I'd appreciate some expert opinions.

I hate drawing ears. Anyone know a foolproof way of drawing a nice looking ear? :P I can never make them look like they're connected to the head right.

Rip me a new one.

you did not attend Fred's head tut class did you

look for it, there is a quite good method for drawing stuff like this.

on your drawing the chin, upper lip shape and the skin-thing-under-the-chin looks odd to me.. not really wrong just odd.

looks like the nose is on a different angle to the rest of his head, other than that it's fine. This is the standard stuff up I make too so I can't really help in fixing it.
Hopefully someone hard core will come along and sort you out soon.
Probably nothing to it; moving the line between the nostrils a little perhaps.

Nex- I did, actually. Although I probably should have taken a refresher course before I went at this Trying to put it to practice; do you have any idea how I might make that area you speak of look better?

micke- I took a shot at defining the jaw line, but it didn't seem to look right. Would you suggest a sold line from ear to chin or just a hint at it?

Manik, It's not bad. The perspective looks right enough.
The only thing I'd say is that there are landmarks on the human body. That is, there are areas that are nearly always rendered, to tell the viewer what's going on.

The jaw line should be there (like Micke said) and the areas at the base of the neck could be fleshed out more to say, "hey this is my neck."

Manik-

I did a draw over of the head you did. The lines represent two three things. Red line is the centerline of the head. Green lines are the facial plane parallels. The blue line is direction of head tilt.

Remember to keep all the facial features parallel to one another, from top to bottom of the head. Also make sure that both eyes fall on the same parallel, both nostrils, and both corners of the mouth.

The blue line represents head tilt. Pushing edges in this direction will better help the direction the character is looking. Try to find other spots to push this also. The jaw line is a good place, the side plane of the nose, etc.

Also watch the connection of the trapezius muscle inserting into the neck. YOu are making your character have too much of a neck, too much mass on the back side of his head.

The warm grey planes represent the side planes of the head, the cool blue, the bottom planes.

I also added a bit more on to the right side of his head. The lips look like they are pasted on right now the way you clipped off the right cheek area. In this ange, you would see, ever so slightly, where the right corner of the mouth is...but that idea comes with time and practice, and a lot of careful observation...

I like the image though, reminds me a bit of Mickes stuff...

Post the final when you finish it up...

Fred-

Your redraw helped me a ton! The visual aid helped me understand what you were getting at. After looking at it, I was able to spot mistakes all over my own piece.

I redid it, giving your color scheme a try in order to help me understand the shapes and planes that make up the face.

I like how the redo turned out, although it lost a little of the style/feeling I was going for. But the learning experience more than made up for that.

One thing you didnt mention but I noticed in your drawing is how you made the eyes more deep into the head, as they would be. I tried to get that across in mine.

Thanks for your guys' comments and suggestions! They helped me know what not to do next time. So now what needs fixin` ?

"hey this is my neck "

Looks good Briarieos, though her hands bother me for some reason. Why I am looking at her hands, I have no idea
