Wow, this place is still flooding with great stuff. So I thought I'd post something again... Here's an image I made at my summer job when I should have been doing something rather else, it's quite unfinished:

Looks sort of like my old (old as in "1999" ) stuff, maybe it appeals to someone... I think I'm going to finish this picture one of these days, I'd like to do something to that background on the left.

Anyway, this version is already released since I entered it in the graphics competition at Assembly 2000 this weekend, it got 8th place I think... The quality of the compo was rather good on average but lacked any particular highlights really. I have to say I don't like the two winning images too much, but judge for yourself if you're interested, all the entries can be found here:

ftp://ftp.scene.org/incoming/ASSEMBLY2K/grfx/

( and the results are here: http://www.ojuice.net/view_article.asp?id=1111 )

Those files are all pretty big since the images are in tiff format and there's also 3 intermediary steps for each image. Those other people's steps are in fact rather interesting - if you're a learning digital artist you could do worse than have a look at them

btw klaivu, I liked your "angels" image in the compo, it's beautiful and atmospheric...

Nice one , i'm very impressed. I like the colour mixtures either side of her shoulders and neck (and her of course)
I'm guessing that she's indulging in the fond memories of her now departed husband who died suddenly while working in the sugar cane fields?
.....sorry but I couldn't resist.

SFR, It's very nice, so I hate to complain. But some of the edges are a bit soft. Seems like you could tighten 'em up in places.

Love the colors; the cool/warm contrast works.

This is incredible work. I will agree with Alias, there are a few edges that could be refined. The ear attachment for example, a bit detached at the moment. And some of the background shapes can be a bit distracting, but the image overall is absolutely beautiful. She looks so calm...

Saffron, i thought that was the most beautiful image in the compo. ( I voted for myself, however, hehe. ) And, uh - I think my entry looked like shit on the screen.. the saturation was waay up and it was too blurry.

Hey Saffron,

Your pic is great! =) Please finish it! The masses on the left look like floating rocks, which is cool. =))

Cool, nice if you people like it... yes, I agree I should tighten up the edges (that ear, ooops, somehow I completely missed it ), and maybe do something more detailed for the background like I originally intended.

She's my girlfriend, there's another old portrait of her drawn from live model here, it's pencil... Many people seem to like painting fashion models from magazines or something, but I find that sort of boring (no offense to anyone intended) - where's the fun about making a portrait if you don't know the model and can't show it to him/her

About ftp.scene.org, it seems to be under a lot of load - no surprise really, I guess
everyone wants the demos from asm (the demo compo was pretty awesome this year)... you could try ftp://acid2.stack.nl, but they seem to be very busy too. So I put the Assembly gfx compo top 3 on my webpage, didn't have hd space for any more, sorry... it's here:
http://www.saunalahti.fi/saffron/asm2kgfx/

(I like Cybobird quite a lot...)

Hey, that cybobird looks a lot like that bird in the last story (TARNA) of the original Heavy Metal movie...

Yeah sfr, great picture !
Don't know how to express myself. But, I like the way you do things in your very own rough style. It has a very rich feel (like wine). hehe, did that make sense at all ?

burp!

Great! Sfr, I just love your work. Very much inspiring..

the colors are rocksolid as usual! I love how you put detail where you want the viewers attention, and leave the rest rather sketchy.

How about a painter tutorial on how you do a pic like this? We're still waiting for Vebjorn's painter feature and I bet you could come up with some magic words also. How about it?

Frost, think Cybobird is a copy? I've never seen Heavy Metal so I can't say, but I looked at the steps for the bird and thought it was original. Oh well.

Thanks to everyone for the comments! Boomstick, I have nothing against doing a tutorial, but I have no idea what I would say - this is a very simple (and unfinished) image after all, there's nothing fancy happening behind the scenes... But there's some steps here if these are of any interest:

Addendum... gfxzone has an Assembly 2k graphics compo gallery up with nice thumbnail browsing of all the entries, it's here for those not in the mood of downloading 4-meg zip files for each picture:

I like yours, Mdubs and klaivu's most there. Lum's is cool too.

I really dont like this bird pic that much.. Its kind of uninterresting and a bit dull compared to some others.

Saffron,

Here's a link to a Heavy Metal (1981) Movie Overview.

The bird I'm referring to is this one, of course, I'm not saying it was a copy, but there is a definite resemblance I think. (not that there would be anything wrong with using it as reference)...

cheers.

Hi there sfr.

I love the way the warm colours of her face contrast with the cold grey/green background.

Workmanship on this is incredible. Nice one.
