I agree with Vebjorn about Frank's contribution to fantasy art. There is a look and feel to modern fantasy art that originated with Frank. He kind of represents a line in time between the old Jules Verne (sp?) look and what we know today. It is much like Tolkien and fantasy books. He may not have invented it, but he created the a standard that has been often immitated.

I wouldn't say I "hate" Boris. I mean, the guy can paint better than most. But there's nothing interesting about it to me. Boris reminds me of those guys in High School art who copied everything and never drew from their minds. There's some skill there, but...eyoooh. Me, I liked Boris when I was ten or eleven, until I discovered Frazetta at about twelve.

And if you feel like comparing and contrasting... they've got about 270 Boris pics in a separate gallery. Kind of a shame, I'd like to see more frazetta. Oh well. Guess that's why I bought his books.

Does any one else feel that Boris's earlier works were better. His paintings were nowhere near as sharp and detailed, more smoky and dark, somewhat.....Frazetta like?.
I remember I had a very early edition of a Conan volume (not sure which series...though I know now its worth quite a bit of cash now) and I still think that cover was one of his best.
Though Frazetta still kicks the most ass and he's got the coolest signature.

It just occurred to me, If Boris or Frank where on the board and they were giving us feedback and tips, you would be saying " Oh wow, they are Gods!" You should really learn to study art and understand it. Even if it's 60's or 70's fantasy stuff. People where saying the Same thing about Rockwell back in his time. "it's over used, seen one you seen em all" bla bla bla. If there stuff is so bad, then why is it everyone here knows of them? Why is it so popular?
You may be very surprised to find out that a large majority of your favorite artists loved Frank and Boris's work when they were getting started.
Another thing you should understand is, Frank Did a great deal of Illustration. Like Veb here on the forums, you don't always get to choose your subject matter, and you do what pays the bills. As for Boris, his stuff is borderline illustration; it's very close to fine art. ( I use fine art loosely) His stuff doesn't tell a story, it's more for aesthetics and visual beauty.

Opinions about art vary, they always will.

totally off topic, but i can't let the remark about frazetta's signature pass -

I HATE SIGNATURES! i hate all the spiky, stylized colorful things that take up a whole corner of a picture and throw off the whole composition! i don't mind a small, tasteful, unintrusive little scribble, but it seems like most new artists spend a month working on their signature before they even work on their drawing!!

i see quite a few really warped drawings with these elaborate signatures, and i just have to smack myself in the forehead. *smack*

i'm not sure about the history of these signatures, but it seems like they're really rampant in fantasy art, and since frazetta is the granddaddy and has "the coolest signature" i'm going to give him a great big thumbs down in that respect

thanks for letting me vent. btw, i do own a couple of his books, and i don't have any problems with him otherwise.

Hennifer - Chill out. His signature, whether it be on a painting or a blank piece of paper just looks cool. Seeing as he's slightly good at what he does its not surprising and hey, its not as if I masturbate over it, it was just a passing comment for christ sake.

I have a little thing against Boris. But ultimatly I have to yeild to the much more insightfull and mature opinions of the illustrious Loki and Veb.

I didn't think anyone would take offense because the thread was about subjective flights of fancy anyway.
Boris is good at what he does, lots of people like him, I'm nowhere near as good as he is etc. but he draws shiny figures with crappy studio lighting and it gets to me. It is a subjective opinion not an insightfull researched objective one.

Wow..why do people hate some artists, what have they done to you to deserve it? Steal your car, or made you look at their art.I`m a big Frazetta fan, I also think some of Boris` 3000+ paintings are pretty good. You can probably do all the tracing you like and not even get close to his results with oils. I have almost all the books published from both artist mentioned, and Frazetta does have some artwork that might look dull for an untrained eye. I think Joachim still can remember 5-6 years ago when I didn`t even like frazetta, Mainly because I`d only seen really crappy prints of his slighlty less brilliant paintings.

Another point. Julie is Boris wife now. wonder why they paint similar;-)

From my experience, the untrained eye will usually prefer Boris over Frazetta just because the extreme polish. Just like they think airbrush kicks ass;-) Also from seeing a good deal of Boris work, I can say I don`t like all of his art, but I don`t feel like I can say that he sucks.

Finally, I feel a bit attacked too,that , considering my style resembles Frazetta a bit. Not that a care though, since I`m more or less paid to do so. Well atleast I`m NOT stealing parts like that Hoffman guy...

As for style...here`s a small reminder for all of you: How many of you have studied art history? Noticed they had entire decades when most artist painted the same way/style?

Fantasy style was more or less created by Frazetta, thats why most of it will be standing in his shadow. And to some degree I can agree with Micke. If you want to be a real original, do original settings and original stuff.

It's funny the sort of comments you get to read on internet from time to time. People can say the stupidest things with -such- conviction.

It's pretty clear that the Frazetta vs Boris comments above really just come down to little more than personal taste. The people who hate Boris' work simply don't like that style, or perhaps once did but have grown tired of it over time. The same arguement goes for Frazetta.

Yes, Boris did develop his style from Frazetta (and his sci-fi work is definitely influenced by John Berkey), but he's taken it in quite a different direction. And lets be fair about this - Frazetta's style developed from the work of St. James.

It would be pretty hard to find a leading artist today who's imges don't reflect the work of another artist in some way, and usually more than one. It's not too hard to see past influences even in the work of Spooge but, as with Boris, he's taken the influences and developed them into his own style.

Personally, I still very much enjoy the work of Fritz but have grown a little tired of Boris' color work in recent years. I still enjoy seeing his sketches and drawings though.
