Here is the long hall of it. Finally done scanning everything. The first 7 images are of my ACCD folio I did when I was 16-17 yrs old. I am 30 now, wow, old fuck! This is 7 of the 12 that still exist and are visible to the eye. The other 5 ar torked...

There are 3 comic samples from a year and a few years ago.

The really old comic pages, four in all, were from a comic I did in 3 grade. I think I was 9 or 10. This is the oldest stuff I know I can find with me. If I have anything older, my parents have them. God I cringe looking at this stuff.

The photo is of a few of the skate and snowboard graphics I have done. It was shot 3 years ago. This is probably about a 5th of all the ones I did in my board art career.

The two paintings are a couple more of the gouache quick sketches I do. They are 4 x 5 inches each, and each took an hour and a half.

And finally the four other images are some sketches, story boards and concept work from a game none of you will ever see called Beneath. It was a tomb raider killer game, as the corpos put it, till Activision killed it because it wasn't Indiana Jones. Too bad, the game was all but done, then they pulled the plug. I l;ook at the game now, and we had a great thing going. Activision sucks...hehe...
Hope you like this stuff, comments are always welcome, and I really enjoy what you all have to say. Thank you...

The accd stuff is as followed,
1.scratch board
2.egg tempera paint, this stuff sucks
3. pen and ink
4. verithin pencils
5. prismacolor
6. egg tempera again
7. graphite
The stuff not seen are marker studies. This was back in 1987. Illustration was still hot, but declining at the ACCD, as when I went to the seminar, there wasn't a whole lot that was interesting about the illustration department. I am sorta glad I didn't accept, and sorta regret it. The only regret I have is that I didn't learn Industrail Design thoroughly, but I am now getting all the instruction I need from Wacomonkey(Phil), and architectural instruction from Francis(Francis)...

Give it a bit of time. There are too many images. I should have broken this up into different threads...sorry, too much stuff...If you need me to I will post them in different topics...eep...I guess I take too much advantage of the T1 connection. Everything loads up instantly here...sorry again.

Fred! I'm shocked when i see these pictures, and even shocker when you said that these were done when you're 16-17! I'm now at the same age as yours and there's NO WAY, NO WAY i can do stuff like this. And now after seeing this post, I became very worry because if a normal portfio to an art school is unbelieveble like this, i would die. So does a portfolio have to be this good? Do you draw everyday when you're 16, if yes, how much time per day?

What can an amateur say ?

Mr Flickstone is a man with heaps of skill and a work rate to match.
Really pinches that part inside of me that says , " you dont need to practise to get results, some good ideas will pull you through "

I would love to see clearer versions of your board art samples and more of your painted landscapes ( you posted some a couple of weeks ago ).

I really like the strange feel of the black and white seascape with the surfer, reminds me of a modified etching in a museum.

clank clank ( 2 c worth ).

Hi Fred,
Please tell me your drawing and art abilities were amazing for your age when you were 16/17. Were they? If your abilities were only average compared to other portfolios then I guess I can just say good bye to any future in art!
Amazing stuff though. Love every bit of it!

Fred-It seems as though you covered every type of style there is to cover in art. I'm so amazed by your skills Fred. Kinda makes me feel like practicing freehand drawing again and posting stuff although theyre not that good. Thanx for your inspiration Fred.

Hey Fred,
My desire to see some less than fantastic pics of yours has been saited (I don't mean that in a bad way) I am now comfortable in the knowlage that you are human (or were one at some point in time)
I am also now withdrawing any comment's I made about your comic stuff not being as good as your other stuff. those pages are wonderfull.

Do your still skate?
I used to do a lot of Ramp skating (Rollerblading not Boarding) but I gave it up a couple of years ago for fear of breaking my hand and not being ablt to draw as well. Too many failed over the copeing (how do you spell that?) flips got the better of me.
I got to the stage where the stuff I was doing was way to dangerious. A few bad stacks and I was out of action for a few days
Rollerbladers don't know how to stack half as well as Skateboarders.

btw, that bottom line drawing of the indian character from that "Beneath" game does it for me. (err..you know what I mean)

Although you no doubt wanted to keep these old pics under wraps, Showing then is much appreciated.

These are all excellent. There is a ton of great concept art from Beneath (as well as the game itself of course) that will probably never see the light of day, and that's a damn shame.

Ron can draw ANYTHING. I've never met another artist with his breadth of skill and knowledge.

Where can I get a reprint of Prehistoric Creeps? That stuff is still better than 50% of comics on the racks today!

Lots of really nice stuff there Fred, !. It's really nice to see your old stuff, and the progress you've had..Also, your style is really recognisable in all the work you've done, even from early stage.
You have a great talent for sure !

Btw, Prehistoric Creeps, wasn't that released in Heavy Metal or something

Hey, looks pretty decent-I'm surprised you hadn't started painting by then. Great job! If anyone's interested and if I can find much of it I'll post some of my High School stuff too. Quite scary, I think. ^_^

We should start an "old crappy pics" thread.
I think there was a bit of one a while back.

Nice work there Fred!

What areas would you say you mostly concentrated on as a student... if that question makes any sense?

Uhm, thank you for all the kind words. I am a bit embarassed with this stuff, it is kinda refreshing to know that maybe I shouldn't be so hard on myself.
Getting on this forum really opened my eyes to how much I need to practice, and how much more I need to learn. There are so many amazing approaches to art here, and so many subjects that are so appealing. The topics discussed and the expertise of the many. Being able to show old work like this is always intimidating, but the end results can be very satisfying. Knowing that someone else can look at what I have looked at for so long beating myself up with, and saying this is horrid, and they can see it for something else, more positive than I do or did, it has to make me stop a moment and wonder. How much further would I be if I never chastised myself with this type f thinking, etc. Or even, how much of an ass would I be if I was always overconfident...
I guess you could say that I have always been ahead of the game, at least in my surroundings, with art and the ability to do it. But since I have never found myself extraordinary in much, I have always seen myself as just another guy doing drawings. The past several years have kicked my ass into realizing I have a bit more, especially with regards to teaching, and I have an over abundance of passion for the arts, I never want to see them die. At least not till I do. So I give advice, I teach at private art schools, whatever I can do to help.
But now, thanks to all you, I also realize I must produce. I need to step back a bit and get things out there that help push the inspiration. So I have started again with a whole bag of inspiration, and I am charging full force into a whole new segment of my career, one that I hope will get me a bit of face value so I don't have to song and dance myself every time I am introduced to the same person again and again. I am going to post everything I do along the way to get some honest feed back. That is more helpful than anything. And none of you should get bummed out when someone is critiquing your work. Suck it up and use it to your benefit. It makes you a stronger individual to be able to say, yeah, this is all wrong, let me revisit the subject matter...rather than getting completely self annhiliating, ruining your day, and possibly others. Bah, who cares about the others, we need to start with ourselves...
Enough of this psycho babble.

The Prehistoric Creeps will never see the light of day again, but it was a good time. All the characters in it were elementary schol friends, the object they were represented the part of their personality I knew them for best...

Thank you again for the support, it means a lot. I hope I can give in return what you all help me with, and not just tutorials, but genuine confidence. Thanks...

Ceenda-as a student, I mostly studied soccer, track and skateboarding. Honestly, the only real schooling I ever got was from my prep art teacher at American River Jr.. College, Jim Kaneko. I mentioned a few threads back that it was John, but that was his brother, I also took classes from, but he was concentrated in the fine arts, ceramics and glass. I digress. In kindergarden I had an art instructor named Danny Dapiro, I don't know if he is still living, or arting, wish I knew. I remember in one class, he did an image of Reggie Jackson, and that did it for me. I was a big fan of Reggie, but a bigger fan of art. This was before Star Wars came out, four years I think. From that point on, I drew everything I could. I copied line drawings in magazines, comic pages, photos. My mom and dad are both very gifted individuals, so they never hindered my progress. They always supported me in everything I did. It was I who always bashed myself back. I wish I had some prozaic...hehe...
But to current, after I moved to SoCal, I started getting freelance work in the skateboard industry, I needed to know graphic design, I also thought I needed to know product design. So I took every JC class I could find in San Diego relating to art, took them and found myself already knowing the stuff I was learning. I took a couple night classes at ACCD for $400 a class. A few weeks, and a four hour drive one way. It was worth it, sorta, but I knew I wasn't really learning what I needed to know.
Then came Jeff Watts. His school opened my eyes to, oh my god, the figure. This is what I have been missing. Real art, real theories. From that point on, I would say that Glen Villpu, Steve Huston, Gen Orbik and Andrew Burard Hoy have been my biggest influences. Jeff Watts, a huge inspiration. Mark Westermoe, Segre Micheals,Gary Pruner, John Watkiss, Micheal Butkiss, Morgan Weistling, Angus McBride, and Drew Struzan were all great instructors that gave me heaps of confidence, and knowledge. And now I have Craig Mullin's and John Watkiss, Francis and Phil, to thank for my knew jolt of inspiration and instruction. Everything they say has helped me way too much.
It is not so much, at least for me, not so much what you learn, but who you learn it from. I have always tried to find the best. I sought out Adam Hughes, Dave Stevens, Mark Schultz, Robert Mcginnis, and others, to find out how they worked, what makes them tick. And I have been given great advice. I don't fan boy them to death. I ask them, in a comfortable way, what information I am looking for, but I don't ramrod them for it. So it has always helped me out.
I can't end this without giving thanks to a few others that helped me find my spirit. Jorge Luna, a long time friend of mine who wrote the Prehistoric Creeps, Eric Philo, also a long time frined of mine, and first person I ever drew anything with. We did the best Star Wars collages. And Nghia Lam. He was my roommate for a while, and also an instructor and student of Jeff Watts. Strange guy, but he had a dark past, I don't blame him for his quirkiness. But that guy could draw, my god, a perfectionist to say the least. And quite an innovator. I hope some day you guys can see the stuff he does.
I am soapboxing again so I am stopping. I hope that answers your question Ceenda, sorry about the overkill. I am as I said, passionate to the arts, I won't shut up once I start. You have to kick me in the nuts and drop me to shut me up. Just don't do it too often, I would like to have kids some day...
And of course everyone

Micke-try the third post. I put quick links to each of them...Not sure what might be wrong. Sometimes, web hosts like xoom.com don't let me see the images either, but it seems to be on a day to day basis. Not sure if it is my computer, or the provider...

When in doubt refresh.
the last half of them didn't go up the first time for me but it worked the second.
Geocities and such are prone to doing what ever they want.
Including claiming ownership of anything you put on your site.
Has anyone had any problems with this. Does it mean that they now own all of these images and everthing else fred posts?

Scary shtuf

Ron,

Amazing as usual...It is great to see such an awesome artist put so much time and effort into furthering art.....Teaching and just plain being cool and posting stuff for all to see what to aspire too.....Great stuff.....

Nghia just joined on at the company I work for in Seattle....WOW....He is freakin amazing....Its great to just see him work...I should mention to him the forum and tell him to post some stuff....Or see if he already knows about it....Does he want to be found if he's hiding?? I dont know.....dont know him that well, but an amazing artist yes...I've seen...

Do you know Mike Christian as well?? He works here too.....another amazing artist in my eyes....

Diz-Isn't Nghia's stuff incredible? You should get him to post, it'd blow people away...
I know Mike a little bit. I met him a few times at the house we all lived in(Nghia, Jason Rodriguez, and I. He was always real quiet. Great art though...
Say hello to Nghia if you see him again soon...
