After two years of academic studies and reading horror stories of how folks lost their portrait drawing abilities due to the academic college art system, I was understandably scared to do this.
One of the things I discovered as I was drawing traditionally last night is that I actually still have my portrait drawing ability. Needless to say, I was highly ecstatic that it turned out this well.
Something in the drawing is slightly off, but I am quite rusty after no portrait drawings for two years so I'll forgive myself for that.
I adjusted the levels slightly in Photoshop because it was just too light to have seen anything when I scanned it. I used graphite pencil for it. I know Elvis' hair is supposed to be 100% black, but I didn't have any charcoal handy.

I noticed some things that are left over from the line drawing stage of rendering:
-the eyes are not square with the face, prolly parallel with the top or bottom of the paper. It's something I do alot... not laying out form outlines ahead of time before going in with the contours. My faces tend to be slightly twisted similarly.
-Some of the white areas on his face lack definition or texture, so his face looks like pasty baby fat instead of elvis-fat Of particular note are the cheekbones and the cheeks to the side of his lips.
-All together, his facial features, (mouth, nose, eyes) are pronounced away from subtler features like smile lines and cheek bone tops and the wrinkles that curl out from under the tear ducts.
-hard, dark lines on the top of the nostrils. I still can't draw a good nose without photographic reference, so again, it's something I do too
-good job looking at the specular lighting on the rhinestones
Overall, I gotta say, it's Elvis and there's no missing that fact. |
