I have been archiving my sketches recently. that is to say I am scaning them so they don't dissipear or get smudged. There are a few that I still liked so I thought I'd share them with you all.
This link is to a sketch composition I often use as a portfolio piece. If I displayed it then the page would be stretched a bit too much for my likeing so use the link. It is my favorite so don't get too lazy and just look at the displayed ones

This is a really shoddy watercolour I did in HS but i though it might be of interest.
(I'm still searching for that really grubby old stuff) *shudder*
This is a Sraper/Sratcher board thing. Anthoney posted some of his so I thought I'd follow suit.
And I thought that fred might be interested in seeing this upon hearing his comments on the scraper board technique.
Tis not by my hand. My girlfriend is the originator. I just hope she doesn't see it because I didn't ask her *asking for it*. The forum is set as my home page as well so I'm gonna be in big trouble. *sorry*
It is rather good though non?
If you people say it's good then I may get in less trouble
Now gimme feedback |

the cat freaks me out.. like a cat from hell
Man your stuff is really great there!
I really dig the stormtrooper and the first character.
The cat's detail is terrific.
Can you explain this technique in some short words? Looks very interresting.
Was the stormtrooper done in the same way? How did you get it so clean?

Rinaldo-funny, that is my nickname with my family...This stuff is really nice. I dig the robotic designs. They have a nice sense of originality to them. I'd like to see you take those to a finish...Mind if I try my hand at one? I really like the overlapping shapes. Almost automotive in a strange sorta way. The only thing a bit strange is the arm, a bit much hanging off it. Almost like the skin was torn away to show the undercarriage.
The stormtrooper is super clean. Sorta reminds me of mickes work. was that straight to finish, or wass that a projection. Really clean..
The scratchboard cat is quite impressive too. Your girlfriend is also very talented. You both callaborate on any works? She an aspiring illustrator as well? Must be nice to have a girlfriend that see's eye to eye with your creative side. Always been my downfall...
Oh well, nice work... |

The Scraper boad technique involves a paper/board that has a clay coating which can be scraped off to reveal white, It comes in a black variety (the cat) where you scratch with a custom made tool to get white (it's a bit like a quil pen but sharper). The other kind is white paper (the stormtrooper) where you have to put down the black first with ink and then take out what you want. You use one or the other depending on how much white or black you want in the image.
The stormtrooper was using reference but I didn't use any projection. I might have transfered a pencil drawing using transfer paper but I don't think so, and this was just an outline which I painted black. It is hard to visualise what you are going to get because you have to put black on everthing that is going to be anything but white. I hope that makes sense. if not then yell at me and I might be able to have another go.
Fred- What is your nickname? "Rinaldo?" please alborate The storm trooper is clean because I did it in like 20 min. I spend so much time messing around and drawing what I like, that I leave my school stuff to the last minute. It was part of practicaly a whole semesters work that I did in two days. I also like the results of this "leave it to the last minute technique" because you often get some really spontanious images. But I pretty much faild becuase I didn't hand stuff up for crits.
I've noticed Micke using PS to get a similar effect and I'm gonna have a go at this because I like the look of crisp B+W with the scrapper board but it requires a lot of planing, and effort.
Having a partner who is interested in the same sort of things as you can be good and bad. on one hand you have things to talk about but on the other you sometims It would be nice to hear about some other things besides what you yourself do al day
But yeah to have someone who understands the driving forces behind why you spend all day drawing and creating stuff is very good.
We don't colaborate because it is hard to mix work with pleasure. She is now doing a lot more design (as in print and web) than Illustration, which is a shame.
X-pLaGue- if you mean the robots on the second page. then no I take it out of my head. I wish I had some referance for those robots. That would be cool
Obviosly it is based around the human figure, so all I do is put some techy stuff in there instead of muscles
Thaks for the kind words all of you.

I think it turned into the "A bi monthly theme painting for all to join in on" thread.
But I'm down for some robot/bio-organic drawin
I also like the idea of describing a scene and everyone draws it. |

Ohh.. and Fred, you are more than welcome to play around with those robots. go for yer friggin life.
I already worked up that one robot, (the first thing I ever posted) I spent ages on that design. I had all these neat things it could do, worked it all out. I'll do a comic with that one day for sure.
I can send you a bigger image if you like?

Rinaldo - these are great! I might try scratchboard stuff sometime. I think M.C. Escher did most of his stuff on scratchboard. Does it take longer to do than most mediums? Also, can you 'undo' mistakes easily on scratchboards?
Girlfriend, talented girlfriend too. [looks downward] Well, 0 out of 2 ain't bad...
... yes it is... boo hoo hoo...

It can be fairly quick but it's not anything like pencil. you have to do a bit of planing. I think that my girlfriend just took a scraper to the paper and it was pretty quick. if you are able to not mess around with tracing and transfering then it is fast.
If you get something wrong on the black board you just paint back over with ink and start again. if you get something wrong with the white you can take some away and then redraw. you have a few shots at this before the clay coating wears away. Depending on how hard you scrape of course.
A good tip I can give is to make sure the room is warm when you do it. If you live in a cold place, or it's winter do it infront of the heater otherwise it cracks, chips off, and generaly gives you a bad line.
It's a whole bunch of fun tho |
