[Fred Flick Stone]

Ceenda inspired this, I wrote it up yesterday. It involves a theme that we can all draw to, crits are ok, but that isn't the idea of this thread.
This thread should NOT copy what has already been out there, unless you really feel compelled you need to. I am not quite sure if this is going to work, but hopefully some neat art will just magically appear by the many talented hands on this forum...
I am not claiming that I need to start these themes,but everybody says we should do this, we should do that...but no one does anything about it...so I took a bit of time to start a theme, so none of us can say "we should"...if you guys think this sucks, feel free to speak up. Personally, I like the idea of this, you never know what will come of it. And who knows some of you might end up with some great portfolio peices along the way. THis is the theme I designed yesterday. I enjoy the post apocolypse themes because the visuals for it have not yet been seen by anyone, so there is so much room for interperetation.
I also want to see what people can come up with in their imaginations, vs. finding some interesting photo and tweaking that. Heres the theme for those of you who didn't read the thread, I will post some images too at one point, but as of right now I have an insane number of deadlines to finish, which is why I haven't yet posted part two of both tutorials. Something like this is wasy to whip up on the key board...

Enjoy, and I hope some people participate. I really enjoy the thread thing. A good example is Synj's thread's he starts with the animations, and everyone adding to it. I would really like to see the art threads do the same thing as Synj's...just a hope...


I like the theme 3d Palette started with the post apocalyse images. I am going there too, but in a different light. I think I like this type of theme because it has to come from the imagination, and not from something already instilled into us visually. Although you could argue this point, by mentioning Blade Runner, Dark City, Akira, Mad Max, etc. these are a few peoples interperetations. It does not mean we have to confine ourselves to them, and since post apocolytum has not dropped into our laps yet, the future is waiting for us to color it...here we go, and be honest, tell me what you think, if this flies, I will make a thread for it, and it can sit and churn about for several months, we will give it a cut off date, so a new topic can be posted. Make a schedule, then no one can say, awe man, how long do we have to wait for the next one...
It is the year 2110, hopefully none of you will be alive then, it wont be pretty. The earth has been ravaged, not by war, but by mother nature. Storms of immense proportion have ripped across the globe. Hurricanes of over three hundred miles an hour are not uncommon. Tidal waves rather than gentle sets crash agaist the crumbling coast lines. CIties are basically abandoned because work schedules have been"temporarily delayed" for the next few decades...people, those who are left, have communed together to maintain some sensibility, rather than go insane. Most of those people are dead now anyway. The last few years, the storms have slowed down, and regular seasons are beginning to show again. People are pulling themselves out of the makeshift hubbles they have built...technology has sorta, well, industry in general has not been up and running for sometime now, so people have had to make do with what they have, and what they can scavage...The earth has taken over again, cities are running into the same situation the Mayan cities did, Vegetation is over running everything, and foundations are uprooting...freeways are nice smooth plains of dirt and weeds...the governments have been reduced to wealthy militias with fancy weaponry. They do most of the theiving and plundering, since they have the tools to overpower. But they are no concern to us now, for they are somewhere else far away, battling mother nature in their home region...one day we will have normality again, wont we?

You, the artist, have been holed away for years now perfecting your hobby, since that is all art has become these days. YOu have ample supplies saved away by your grandparents, unused, in hopes that one day they can be used again for creating beautiful images...
The storms are passing, and spring is coming. It is painting season. You can actually go outside and paint landscapes of this strange, yet oddly familiar world...
What do you see, what fascinates you, and what do you end up putting down on canvas...

What will your image be of? Here is your chance to draw or paint anything you feel within this world. YOu are like the preorientalists, going around recording everything you see. Jean Leon Gerome comes to mind, as he was one of the premiere artists of this movement. Look up his stuff as to how he recorded history with a brush...

I think this can produce some incredibly interesting images, as it doesn't have either figure, or object specific ideology in mind. It can be either, both or whatever.

I hope this gets some fires burning...if you guys like it, I will go ahead and make a thread for it, and see what the heck happens...

I like the first idea a little better. The theme is open enough to do all kinds of stuff.
I like the contrast of new, green vegetation vs the old, left from the war/destruction man-made mechanical stuff. Sets up for some awesome environments. Good idea =)
Too bad i have so many other things to draw right now, but i'll definitely try to make some art for this forum. Sounds fun!

Its a great pic, but personally, I couldnt see this after over a 100 years. This pic shows to me, like maybe 5~20 years (max) of undisturbance. But thats the great thing about personal opinion right? We all have different ideas. Its cool that you came up with such a great idea in such little time! I wish I could do that, and wish I could get my graphire faster (gotta get more money......) Good Job!

I like your post-apocolyptic idea. Where I live, we had 4 cyclones earlier in the year, one straight after another. The area got a bit of pounding, so the "what would it be like..." theme strikes a chord with me right now.

Going to tuck that one into the back of my head, mull it over.

Frost, damn that was fast, what really strikes me about the image is that it looks like you painted it at easel level. It also feels like the artist sees a bit of hope, just the way everything is so green and kinda lush, though I gotta say the red car would probably be a bit more worn out in the color. But hey, I think you did this in what twenty minutes? And it looks pretty cool to me.
That big mound in the middle could easily be afew slid over sideways high rises that have collected wind blown sand with good soil that has now been overgrown with vegetation...I like Didn't realize an image would come back so quick, guess I gotta get one done here soon too.

And you guys can do this in any and all mediums you want. You really dont have to be forced into digital only, or traditional only. The story is to just get the mind set in a character mode, like method acting. Get a history for the eye of the depictor, and you get more imagination behind the end result.
And, since this is intended to be a bi-monthly turn around, that would end this in September. So, since my birthday is September Twelve, two months from that would be two days ago, so I think that is an alright amount of time. I will close this thread on September 12 and we can start a new one... have fun with this and really dig deep to put together some epic images. Remember, try all the things you have heard about perspective and form and lighting and such, and get a really quality portfolio peice out of this. Assignments, or theme-alongs like this, instead of thinking of them as just another thing to screw around with, think, I want to be .... fill in the blank, some day, and to be that something, I need this kind of art in my book. I will use these "assignments"(till I can find a more digestable word) to my advantage, and produce some work with this theme in mind, just like a job would want me to perform, and fill the book up with some good work that was maybe helped along to a more quality image by all the crits I get on the forum...anyway, that is what I would do with this kind of stuff. Better to kill two birds with one stone than waste half my time, and produce nothing in the end, which really wasted all my time...

Sorry, this is probably one of my worst pics so far, but I had fun putting it together.

The area of Fred's theme that influenced me the most was the concept of governent leaders, ex-military generals, police officers. gangsters etc. who might take advantage of the new order to put themselves in positions of power. I can imagine these people filling a vacuum that exists when people start re-populating areas on a large scale.

What is more worrying?

A) That these would would get into power?

or

B) That through paranoia and fear people would put them there?

BTW - The character is based on a Commissar from Warhammer 40,000 and NOT M. Bison from Street Fighter. he he

Hey Fred. Glad you liked it. =]

The image wasn't done in 20 minutes, but more like 1.5 hours, just, making stuff up as I went along, then painting over it, then making other stuff, which makes it all that much illogical. =)

I did want to go for a 'positive' feel .. the way I see it, humanity always comes together at times of need.. and in this case, it's just a matter of digging and salvaging equipment from the disaster, lots of ground work to be done to become a bit more functional... it's all there, just buried under, somewhere... =) .. so, why not have hope? (guess I'm just being positive for once.=)

I think I'll probably do a couple more, with different captures of your theme.

Shadow-X : You're right. The image doesn't make that much sense, and it wasn't meant to be after a hundred years, but more like 6-months to a year after or such, where vegetation just started rehabilitating itself. I guess I should have read more attentively... =)

post apocalyptic images are best when they're kept in a futuristic setting. shrapnel, broken support beams, metal scraps everywhere, fire, etc. then throw in some medieval houses and you've got ff7! :P

look at Midgar and you've got the best looking non-post-apocalyptic post-apocalyptic setting.

psi burn- It depends on how post apocalyptic it is. there would be broaken civilization right after the "apocalyps" put then what?

There's much more resonance and depth to fred's idea as opposed to your garden variety everything is fucked and in ruins PA.
There was no bomb. mother nature got her own back. this way we can draw whatever we want as opposed to being limited to guns and and looming wreackages of futuristic paraphernalia.

Don't want to flame, but I really dig fred's idea.

1) Bad colour use.
2) Bad perspective.

This needs a bit of lead-in:

The Great Storms are coming to a close leaving behind a ravaged land, and a gift. A combination of violent electrical storms and chemical laden rains have spawned a new fruit. What it does is still a mystery but pulling it from its vine activates its organic glow.

The proportion of the hand is WAY out of whack but wtf, it was an acrylic painting.

Thank you Nightime, the one in 1994 was about the 3rd painting I ever did. I went to the beach and all I saw was litter. So I just elaborated on it.It was done in high school. (I was a mature age student)It's title: "Greenough Beach, Gone"
The 1996 one is about logging and how too much of it killed the earth. It's title: Once There Were Trees" I painted it at University in my first year.
