I have a question regarding your artwork. I have noticed that in many of your pictures there seems to be squares of color texture (much like a quilt, in pathces) underneath your pictures. If there really are, and i'm not just seeing things, how do you place them? and why? they look great but I would never think to use them.
This question probably sounds weird, so if you don't understand what I mean, just tell me. Anyone else notice them? |

Well, the only thing that I could think of what you might be seeing. Is the pattern of a ".jpg" image. Jpg's compress the pixels in the image into a grid. Which leads to the compression of the file. I think that might be what your seeing. But if not, CM is going to have to answer your question. |

Yeah..they're there. Craig routinely uses screened-back photos for a sort of "base" to work from. I believe he uses a photo of his cat every so often. Check the thread of Francis' conceptual piece where he redid it.
The full rez pic blatantly shows it. |

OHMIGOD they are onto me.
Isric, you don't mean the pixels?
Probably JPEG artifacts. Look at other images here at a similar zoom factor. Also look at higher contrast edges. Are they most apparent there? If so, JPEG.
If that is not it, yes, probably some old photo or painting showing through. I use a lot of old paintings, cause I have solved a particular color problem before. And clients base what they hire me fo based on what they have seen (sigh) |

What I think Isric is refering to is the pattern of dots called a screen. The structure of how colour images are printed on paper using subtractive CMYK mixing. Rows of diffirently sized, semi-translucent (to allow the other colours to shine through if needed) dots under pre-fixed angles.
I noticed some in Spooge's repaint of Francis' image way in the bottom right of the picture.
Isric, hold a magnifying glass over a photograph in any magazine (note: not a real photograph as they don't require a screen like this) and you'll see that same pattern.
Jpeg artifacts are an entirely diffirent thing... obviously..
