Spooge. I recently upgraded to a g4 from an old 604 processor, and so far have found photoshop3 and photoshop5.5 to both be completely reliable. Of course on my old system they would crash every 5 minutes.
I think the stability of apps on the mac in general depends heavily on your extensions. Perhaps make a minimal extension set for photoshop?
And of course MacOsX will be out soon, which should (in theory) solve all your stability problems.

My guess, Spooge (By the way Nice job to both of you on the pieces. I'm on a Star Wars kick right now.) is that it's Always been a priority for adobe to get the Mac version running as best they can, being that the largest chunk of people who Own Photoshop are Mac users.
I think Apple works pretty closely with Adobe too. I mean What else are you going to do with a G4 with that much Floating Point Power besides run Photoshop? It's like the only program that apple can use to Show off some of their fancy new toys. (I mean really what good are the new Multi-processor machines if not for running photoshop?)
So I think with that much Cross promotion really makes them focus their efforts in a more mac centric Direction.
Of Course this is All Conjecture. For all I know it could be that Photoshop thinks the windows logo is Butt Ugly and refuses to run as well as it does on a mac. |

Spooge-
I remember hearing something to the effect that you used the PC for everything but Photoshop. Have you tried runnung on a clean install with only photoshop?
Just a suggestion.
I was told that When they ported PS frorm the MAC they did a bad job. but I dunno.
as they say "maybe the next macos will be better"
Which os are you running?
Ohh...and your pic kicks ass as per usuial |

hmmm glad you liked it...
Here is the fullrez.jpg, if u interested. It would have taken me longer to type what I did than to do it.
Speaking of, Immi, would this be a good subject for the column? Gotta get back into it. There is so much great stuff out there, I kinda feel like it has all been said, Go read that Glen V. stuff. I was going to go over a lot of what is there, but he did it WAY better than I ever could. I hate to say it, but cubes cones and cylinders are the best way to start. I go back to them all the time.
Loki, thanks for the info. At last, someone who has been to the new world. After thinking about it, I have to stay mac for Square, and OSX and hopped up muti G4s make the decision quite difficult. My Wacom crashes while painting a lot. The guys at Square have the same problem. Tried different drivers, different busses, everything. Freeeeze.
I have a suspicion that the virtual memory scheme of Windows and PS dont get along.
I do run a totally clean system, no help. I believe John Carmack once remarked on the steaming, teaming, sweaty fetid bog of legacy crap that underlies the current mac OS. Be at peace while rebooting is a paraphrase.
Penguin, you must be Irish. An upgrade that is stable? Thats like walking a mile in a rainstorm and by chance not getting wet.
B, yes I do use masks here and there, usually where I need to really control an edge (soft or hard). I usually just make a selection, edit in in quickmask if needed, and keep it if I think I will need it later. Nothing really tricky. This image was done over a textured ground of photos. The photos have nothing to do with the subject

I got nuthin'. That was all Craig.
Craig, I was wondering if you immediately came up with that lighting scheme (or something similar to it) upon seeing my original image?
Anyway, thanks for the schooling.

I was very interested to see how Craig would interpret the Francis sketch and I think my first impression as it scrolled into view was much the same as everyone elses; "whoa!".
But what IS it about the image, and all of Craig's sketches, that we respond to so readily?
If you take a moment to actually look at the image; it is rough *beyond imagine*, and looks heavily transparent (or at least there's something odd about it). But somehow your brain is able to overlook these things and register a Neo-style 'whoa'.
I'd love to know what it is and get that into my own work! I am yet to see anyone else to can paint images so roughly yet still get such overwhelmingly positive feedback. Whenever I try to do this, even though I have a fairly good understanding of color and light, I simply get a messy image.
The recent face sketch is another good example - I don't know if I've ever seen a face painted in such dark, murky colors and with such rough linework, yet the image is incredibly appealing.
Craig, have you ever sat down and analysed your images to work out what it is that everyone responds to, or is it purely an intuative thing where even you would have difficulty defining why and how it works?

Francis; great sketch btw!

Great job |

Regarding Photoshop being such a dog on the PC with super huge images/layers, etc. What about SatoriPaint? Res independent, very responsive, you can zoom in to a ridiculous level and work sub pixel level.
Is there some reason this program isn't used more? I've been messing with the freeware version and was pretty impressed. Can't say it would replace Photoshop, but for painting high res images, it seems great.
Any thoughts? |

spooge:
A lot of people, myself included, are interested in the way you paint over other pictures. If you kept the background photo of a separate layer could you hide it and save another jpg with only the stuff you painted? I'd really like to see the difference that photo makes.
It's amazing how our brains ignore details that don't fit with in the picture and imagine others to fill in the picture. I want to see how much this photo adds to the pic
Thanks

Ah well, a little late in posting, absolutely fabulous Francis and Craig. Just great.
I'm actually starting to look _more_ into industrial design and more architectural concept sketches because figures are getting boring, and I really want to get into set design, etc.
Also, kenzo, I don't think as many people use Satori as they do Photoshop because:
1) The interface isn't as intuitive as Photoshop's.
2) Support from Adobe is much greater, and the support base (from users) is far greater.
There's my silver half dollar from 1901. |

Here's my amateur analysis:
I think it's the values. All the values are right on, to the degree that color and really fine detail are almost unimportant. This is sort of a bad comparison, but it's almost like those Star Wars posters that are actually made up of hundreds of tiny images. All the values across the face in the portrait are pretty much what they should be, so it's easy for your eye/mind to fill in the missing detail and extract the whole from the parts. The image (Craig's)has more life or energy because as you're looking at it, the details seem to come up into place or appear, rather than simply having an image where all this blinding hyperreal detail is shoved into your face (Boris). It's an active rather than passive thing - your mind and your eye are engaged by the painting; it's not just a matter of visually slogging through some massive collection of detail that leaves nothing to the imagination.
Damn what a buncha BS.

OK, now that's I've come out of comotose from viewing these images, I'll say, GODDAMN. I think Francis is dead on about Craig. His values in all his stuff are perfect. |
