The srcratch board stuff is ecxeptional. That to me is one tough medium. I don't think I have the patience for it anymore, but it was fun while I tried.
I enjoyed the brief tour, but a few of the images towards the end really didn't scan in well, so it was a bit difficult to see them.
Quite amazing how much improvement there has been since these early sketches eh?
Kinda quiets the soul for a moment...
Nice stuff... |

Thanks about the scratchboard-I did enough of it that even today I'm more comfortable working from dark to light than vice versa. You'd think it'd make you feel good to see old stuff-make you see how far you've come. But man, it sort of has the opposite effect-shows you how bad you once were!

Yeah, I'm of two minds about old stuff. I hate it because it's embarasing but it's good to see how far you've come. Do you remember how you thought these pictures were like "the best". When you get to a new level of drawing and it impresses you so much that you think you are better than everyone else. then you realise how far behind the picture really is and you just have to keep on going.
I dunno, maybe it's just me
When you say high school how old were you. I think the school system works differently in the states (you do live in America non?) compared to where I come from. How does it work? |

No joke Rinaldo-all you gotta do is hang around here with Fred and (especially) Craig and you're constantly reminded of how far there is to go! I think I was 15 when I started HS. So the earliest drawings on here would be from when I was 16(I didn't draw from about 11 to 15).

So how does the School system in the states work. I am curious, the whole deal if you can be bothered.
In Australia we have primary school which starts at about age 5 and has 7 years and then it goes onto high school until year 12. then comes collage/University or whatever you want to call it.
Because if I said did some pics in HS then it could mean I was 12
I've always wanted to know this.

age 1-5: preschool/kindergarten
age 6-12: elementary school (grades 1 - 6)
ages 12-15: junior high school
ages 15-18: senior high school (sophomore, junior, senior) - usually this is what people mean by high school, I believe
ages 18+: college/grad school/post grad
At least in Texas, where I grew up.

Basically most people start Kindergarten at age 5 or 6. They then go to Elementary School at 6 or 7. You go through 1st to 8th grade. In some cases 6-8 is a seperate school called Middle School. 9-12th grades are called High School. You then usually go to a 4 year college, and if you want to get a Master's Degree you go for another 2-5 years after that(Doctor, Lawyer, etc). Personally I skipped Kindergarten, and didn't go to college, since I preferred to practise 3d stuff, and work in it, which I didn't need schooling for.

You're pics are very clean and neat! I always have a problem of smudging my drawings all over the place and by the time I'm finished the whole paper is a tinge of grey! It's so annoying.
As for the whole discussion on 'looking back' well, I'm 16 now so maybe I should try to find pics I did when I was 10?
I drew ninja turtles back then. They were so cool

woo Deedlit(head) and Pirotess(body). Loddoss War is great, their clothing is extremely detailed for a fully animated show. |

Well, taking Fred's lead, I'm gonna post a bunch of old crappy High School art I did(which is considerably less interesting than his). Unlike some people *cough*, I don't throw out any drawings. Anyway, without further ado:
Just doodles. I used to draw a lot just on 3x5 index cards and other small pieces of cardboard, etc. Just easier to carry around than big pads(my friends often had those huge newsprint pads).
Done from Lodoss-the bottom one is copied from a cel painting. Lodoss is one of three animes I like. I appreciated Lodoss since it's anime style was less severely distorted than most.
I saw a trend in Japan towards having big swords(Beserk comes to mind), which I found somewhat silly. The expression on his face is similar to one I saw much later in DragonballZ, when Gohan is trying to use the Zeto Sword. The girl has enormous breasts-she's the only one I ever drew like that. I'm big on elegance and grace, and that's not either. Ugh.
My best friend and I did this one. I think he drew most of it, and I inked it. He'll probably hit me if he finds out I posted it. That was before I even worried about figure drawing. All my artist friends were into comic art, drawing figures and such. I was more into expression, Escher, and Leonardo. That was Sophomore year I think.
This was done to mock my friend's drawing he did for extra credit in...let's see...it was US Gov't I think. His was typically corny, so I made this and put it up next to his. I didn't get any extra credit though(I was in Economics instead).
We were given a dead fish. We were told to do something with it. Since it was art class I figured I should draw it. But I've never been able to keep anything straight, so I naturally got silly. Whilst others drew the fish in exacting detail lying on a plate, I drew these. The first looks like SEGA could have based Seaman on it.
Scratchboard-took awhile, but not long enough. Actually too long, since I quit before finishing. I hate finishing drawings...
Fisher dude... heck I dunno
Expressions I guess-don't remember
Working on expression. I've always been interested in conveying ideas effectively, and not relying on perfect rendering to do so. I try to get the feeling of an image across as quickly as possible. Once I do, the rest is garnish(which is why I usually don't finish).
For about a month all I drew was hands on 3x5s. Was good, because it helped me get those down fairly well for the time. I always flat shaded them.
Marker. We did tons of live figure drawing in my AP Art class. I was OK at it. My friend was better, and there were two other people better than me as well. But then my drawings were always done 10 times as fast. I liked to draw in ink or marker so I couldn't fix stuff. It's why I keep everything- I can always go back and see where I had problems before.
More figures. I generally drew only the most basic lines. Many times no one could tell when it was except me. Since I knew what it was, I figured I could go back and fill it in later. Contradicts my idea of expression in an odd way, but oh well.
That's it. Hope you enjoyed the tour, and I hope it gave all of your egoes a boost! Feel free to post your crap in this thread too.
