I didn't realize that Aliasmoze started a thread of this kind. I grabbed some images online and I am attempting to do quick impressions and hoping to get a matte painting experience out of it. This was about an hour, I am not finished, the background is really unfinished. But I am going home now, and wanted to get some input on this, as I am going to finish it tomorrow, and then start another one. I am going to try to do at least five of these a week. Try to figure out quick and dirty ways to matte paint in photoshop, then try a few of my own made up images.
This started off with lasso tool selections, filled, big and flat. Filled the canvas first with spots of value/hue, then gradated, and then slightly noodled. The original is 2000 pixels by 1100 pixels. This was then reduced down 25% to put on here. I am also posting the image I am working with so you get an idea of what I am trying to mimic. No underlays, no color picking, no line art. Just straight painting...I am enjoying these, but I miss my gouache. I am going home to paint now. Thanks for the critical eyes...

I know it's from a photo but I'm still very impressed!! The bottom section of the painting is what really gets me.. beautiful rendering of the water, especially around those bottom logs. They feel *wet*.

It looks like the mountains may have been rushed along a bit more, but the water more than makes up for it. And besides, who am I to criticize?

your renderings of the water and reflection is excellent .. and the overall picture too.. but yeah u need to work on the bg mountains sommore.. it feels outta place with everything else all detailed :P

The thread I started is for speed pics, 15-30 minutes for practice. Join in if you like. I've been doing lots of practice picks from photos, but I guess I'm going to try some still lifes too. Just gotta get me a big mirror so I can see behind me...

I think I can see a face in the mountains...It's amazing how you can create such a convincing, photorealistic image with so little brush strokes. The haziness of the water is well done. Nice work.

BTW, it was great meeting you and all the other guys at the Art Center during Craig's presentation. Worth the six hour drive.

I like the idea of doing longer than 20 min as well as ultra fast. Maybe we could set up two threads? just a suggestion.

Do you plan to put the gravely river-bed texture in. I have been wondering how to get texture into photoshp without going photo montage. ?

thats where i want to live! and if i ever so yes this is the kinda stuff id be painting, good subject ...

i might "borrow" this picture and paint it too... its really pretty. also good idea to draw like 5 a week, id get bored with drawing landscaped 5 times a week unless i found pictures like this too.

id recommend a snow picture next *ie. fred please find me a nice snow picture like this one of lake louise*

Rinaldo, if I can pull off a convincing rock floor,I will show how it was done. I imagine now that it will have to be done with little flicks, that if placed correctly will read like pebbles under a surface...I am kinda dreading that part, but oh well.

Alias, I have a whole slew of really nice photos I have been, er uhm, "borrowing" from online. I will post a string of them, but I wanna disclain=m now that I am "BORROWING" these. I am not making a profit from them or anything. Just for the exercise of it...I will try to get them up after lunch today...

Francis-I will be working on the ziggurat again today. I wanted to get away from orange and blue for a while. I have been doing too many paintings with that color scheme...
Darkmoon-that is lake Louis? Great eye...do you know if there is a site with more images of this place? It is beautiful, Id like to do some daytime studies with sunlight.
Pimento, did you guys drive back that same day? I noticed Manik posted the day after..you guys are pretty damn hardcore. I use to do that with skateboarding. I lived in Sacto, and would drive to Del Mar or Vegas or whatever to go skate a session in an empty pool or whatever, in some random location, no particular involved, just knew that certain people would be there, the once I idolized and sorta knew. All for the simple idea that I would be sessioning with the best, till I realized that if I just moved down south that I would be skating with them everyday. I praise your dedication. All in the name of happiness right?

I feel like if I could just watch you do it I might be able to glean some kind of insight as to how you do it....looks great by the way.........think you could put together an avi file like spooges bridge, and sink? Just a thought..I know you're busy.
Are doing speed pics helpful to the artist? after reading that thread where spooge said "moving very slowly, with great deliberation" made me wonder, but he already has all the skills so it would make sense for him........I don't know I just think I might be trying to do too many things at once. Maybe I'll just stick with figure drawing....my brain feels like a bag of wet bread........anyway keep this stuff coming it's very inspiring!!

I just wanted to say that its actually Moraine Lake, and not lake Louise. They are both extremely beautifull but the one at hand is Moraine. Apicture similar to this one actually was on the back of the old 20$ Canadian Bill, im still pissed they replaced it. The chute in the middle of the pic has also been skied if anyone thinks like me.

Amazing. I'm new to the list and am impressed. I particularly like the color chosen to sell the wetness on the brown/gold colored logs in the foreground. I look at the reference photo but don't see that color. However, it works and sells the wetness and the reflection... Amazing work...
