ack, craqelure and mosaic! They're only a short step away in the plugin heirarchy from
*gulp*
lensflare!
(oh dear god! I have intoned the name of evil!)

it's ok; play around a bit more. couple of extra colours wouldn't hurt either (or more contrasts)

know what would be a really interesting take on photomanipulation vs. digital painting?

if you create some kind of photomanipulation using whatever filters, no matter how cheesy, and make something that pleases you, even if it's a guilty pleasure.

then, save the image and/or print it off. open a blank image, and try to paint what you've made freehand. could lead to some interesting results.

looks like someone went on a filter high. I dont like the colors. fix the colors, and blend the filter effects better.

I like the colors... so they stay, but I'm a little new in photoshop - so, I take it all filters are a no-no? Or just most? Please explain - thanks

The colors dont really match, dunno. They both have something purpleish that i dont like.

The typography is a bit boring. Seeing that this piece is mainly revolving around text, the typography needs much more attention.

I also lack a bit of an illustrative element. See if you can incorporate a pic of something in it...

Ex:
Filters are not a no no.
It's good to check out the posibillities
in Photoshop (since you have'nt used it much)
and expeiment with the tools and filters, but
it's hard to crit a picture that looks like it's only been made with filters, since it often lacks personal touch. And specially if it's not gonna be used to anything except
personal use make it even harder to judge.
It's easier to crit something specific.
I think it's very important to use them in the right ways and not base a whole picture on it. That's my opinion.

Basically, some filters are a no no. Others are generic and so flexible that they don't give a "canned" result, but filters such a s craquelure, all the eyecandy stuff, and things like that, are easily recognizable by anyone who's used photoshop at all and generally don't impress anyone. If you decide to use such a filter, you should do it not because you were just trying out filters on the menu (which is fine, so long as you don't post the resulting image as your "final image"), but because you knew exactly what you wanted, and using the filter was the best way of getting that effect.

Whatever you do, do not ever use Eyecandy fire or smoke, even if you know what effect you want, though :-P The eyecandy bevels are also fucked up and the photoshop 5+ layer effects give a better result... better yet, use the lighting effects filter (which is one of those basic and generic filters that you won't get flamed for using), gaussian blurred layers or even airbrush it!!
