Hi all

Id like to know how can i draw those wonderful textures of mountains, rocks, etc...
I dont want to use predefines textures o photos, i thinks people like Loki draws it by hand.

Im very frustrated about that , please help me.

In the example of Loki, im refering to the mountais (rocks) he has drawn on his last image.

Thanks in advance

If you take a close look at it. All that's there is a few simple shapes that are the right colour. I imagine Loki would have done a bit of research on what these surfaces look like. There's not that much too it. it's all in the value and shape.
A black background with light grey-blue-green shapes on top. out a bit of black back in to defind cracks and texture etc.

Am I half way there Loki?

Yeah, I think you are. Loki and Mullins and the rest of those hi-res painters scale down their images greatly. If you were to see it at full size, you'd see all the loose strokes. Take a look at Mullins' previous enter screen, the one with the iMac. The small and large versions were posted not too long ago, but I can't remember where. Anyway, the small version looked almost like a photo, whereas the large version was somewhat sloppy. I assume Loki's images turn out the same way. It all tightens up when you scale down.

Do you mean iMAC or are you mixing it up with the G3.

Because I did the iMAC and spooge did the G3.

Err... I don't know... It had a bright bluish-green Apple logo, so I assumed it was an iMac. Do you know where that pic is that I'm referring to? I can't find it...

...Although, your iMac is just as good an example as Mullins' pic. The large version shows all the loose strokes and whatnot, but the small one looks like a photo.

Damn I was hoping you had mistaken me for a spooge. (I'll keep dreaming)

Have you found the pics. the enter screens are on Craig's site but they were talked about recently in a thread called "desktop objects...literaly" or something. I wish people who use high res would show a bigger verison because it's so informative. Just seeing the small ones, it's like howth'fu@#$.

Keep begging and maybe it'll hapen i suppose

yep. it would be really great to see original sized versions of some of those great works.
wouldn't really have to be the whole pic..even just some nice details.
I bet everyone could learn a thing or two.

Here's a detail. It's a crop in original resolution, highest JPEG quality. The image is not as super highres than you think - it was 900x1500, which is quite small IMHO.
I didn't look at any reference when painting the image. I always had a problem painting rocks, so I tried to tackle it here and in some other paintings I did. It's still not quite there.

I basically started out with roughing the whole canyon out, the I put some big details over it and tightened it up.
The far background is too brown - I don't know why I did this. Bad.
The finishing step was placing some light-areas, refining the athmosphere and put a glow over the image, very subtle, but it helps.
