You may have already heard this as im sure the news will become pretty widespread over the next few weeks, but i thought it would be intresting discuss here in the mean time.
A team of international scientists have discovered a living organism in space, just outside the reaches of our atmosphere. The microbe was detected and retreived by a scientific research baloon. According to research there hasnt been any organisms on earth similar to this in 4 billion years. Heres where it gets intresting. They beleive the microbe was brought to our solar system frozen aboard a passing commet. Meaning Wherever that commet originates from is possibly where life began in the universe, so not only have we possibly discovered alien life in space, we have found the missing link. Its now beleived a similar commet hit earth 4 billion years ago infecting our dead planet with life. Nasa has confirmed that is very much a posibility but more research needs to be done.
So what are the implications? Well apart from finding out that there is other life out there (despite how primitive) it also means we could theoreticly find the begining of life in space (some religions could describe this as finding god)
Any thoughts?

Such certainty... They CLAIM it is ET. The organism could well have originated right here on Earth.

yeah its a possibility but nasa claimed not long ago that no microbes originating from earth could travel beyond 11km from earth, this was found 16km. Apart from that the microbe is like nothing on earth at the moment. |

You people should think outside the box sometimes.. You think of universe as a very large box, but it's unlimitely huge! And there are zillions of billions of things besides our little planet. Actially it's more than zillions of billions.. it's infinite

I invented Homo sapiens.
Just like Gore did the internet!
And Brue, SPEAKING IN CAPS LOCK REALLY MAKES ME RESPECT YOUR OPINION. Feeling rather narrow minded-today?
One can believe in God and still accept other people's opinions, not to mention believe in evolution. |

I haven't heard about this, so do you have any sources. I want to read more and perhaps develop a theory of MY origin. . .

That life on earth originated from some comet far far away is quite a good theory but where was life originated from on that planet? Maybe somehow through evolution, non-living stuffs was able to eventually turn into living, but then who's to say that life wasn't origionated from earth?
OR!! the universe is a box like in a huge room with a few other boxes and an organism jumped from one box to another and somethinh happened
OR!!! its just a big game! and our universe is like a MAP and some little kid alien is playing with us, AHHHHHH the humanity

I just wondering what do we gain by knowing where we come from? A lot less religions... there goes our faith system... Have any of you heard about the Culture-Epoch Theory. It states that the socities are in a forever wave of Chaos to Adjustment to Balance then back to a new Chaos. Chaos is caused in a socity when a new idea is introduced and causes the "hat was known" as reality to be changed. On of the best know periods of chaos was the Dark Ages. This might cause our wave to fall again... Is it worth it?
Just a thought!

Ignorance might be bliss, but I personally don't believe in the value of deliberate ignorance. If we were to embrace ignorance and take everything on faith, we'd still be living in caves...
The human being is a curious being, and as such seeks answers to questions passionately, no matter how hard it is to answer. I say go for it, find out scientifically where we came from.
It won't change the way I live my life in any way. It won't even budge my faith in god (I use the term "god" to make it easier. You can read all about my thoughts on faith and religion in another thread.). If someone stops believing in god when they find out that humans might have originated from another planet, I say their faith isn't very strong in the first place.

Pfft again, I say.
Some engineer wiped a phlegm whopper on the balloon. Send it into space, it freezes, breaks off, gets collected. Bam! Slam! Wizam!
Buahahahahaha!
I fail to see how this could be true. There would have been far more media coverage. NASA finds ambiguous patters on a mudball from Mars and the world explodes. Now, tell me how they actually found a real microbian lifeform and it isn't sandblasting us yet?

People today require at least the second coming of Christ or the Apocalypse before they can say any event is life-changing. So life being discovered on other planets or whatever won't make any difference to them anyhow. We've become disinterested as a species in general... "If it don't effect me personally and physically, why should I give a rat's ass?" seems to be the trend. Where have all the philosophers, thinkers and dreamers gone to? |

So let me get this strait... A comet caring a balloon with the life form PORN came from a box universe with its precious package dropped it off. NASA is now studding PORN as much as they can and found it to be the orgy er origin of life. Than somehow we figure that the planet this came from IS the FIRST place life and PORN began.
Damn We are a smart spices .
Just a note to those of you who talk of evolution. What ever you do never say "I believe in evolution" Why? Because it is not a belief. It is an idea based on fact and no mater what you say or how much you deny the idea it is happening, right now, all the time. Just look at the X-Men.
