I'm planning to buy a new 19"INCH flat screen monitor. But I'm not sure if I should buy a Sony or a IIYAMA? Both are very good monitors... |

I can't exactly vouch for Sony's 19" models, but if they're as good as their 21" versions, then I'd say definately go with Sony. I've got a 21" GDM F-500 model here and it just ROXX! Beats the pants of of any IIyama model. However it has to be said that you'll feel that in your wallet. It is considerably more expensive.
Best advice I can give you is to go out and look. Try and find the actual monitors you have under consideration and watch them perform. It's the only way to be sure rather than rely on the usual bullshit printed in the brochures and advertisements..
Bah.. I'm sure that didn't help much.. sorry..

So Sony is deffinitly better??? The Price of the IIYAMA 19"Inch A901HT VisionMasterPro450 isn't much different from the Sony 19"Inch. From the IIYAMA model I know it has a perfect FLAT screen, I don't know if the Sony 19"Inch has one.
Does anybody know a good site, where to find all sorts of Sony monitors and there specs and pictures. The official Sony site hasn't got a lot of info... |

Wow if I compare a Sony "Flatscreen" 19"Inch with the earlier mentioned IIYAMA 19"Inch "Flatscreen" it is indeed more expensive, about 35% more...
But can anyone tell if that 35% more money is really worth buying a Sony in stead of an IIyama. The IIYAMA specs are not less than the Sony specs...
I need more info... |

Occultic,
note that I was comparing the 21" models. Sony's flagship 21" models rip IIyama's to shreds. I DON'T KNOW how this compares to the 19" models. For all I know it might be the other way around.
Like I said earlier.. best thing is to go out and look at them. Specs mean nothing.. Also, more cost doesn't always translate into better performance.. Be wary of that..

I would recommend the IIYAMA 19 inch . . . I remember when I was interested in buying a 19 inch monitor, wherever I looked I found extremely glowing reviews for the IIYAMA. I personally feel that Sony monitors are extremely overpriced. But once again, the best way to tell is to physically see them upclose and personal.

And I guess the best videocard that goes with it, is the Matrox G400?
What kind of videocards do you use?
At the moment I have a Diamond Viper 550, but I'm planning to buy the Matrox G400... |

I'd go for the Sony, cause the latest series of Iiyama often have a slight color difference. Iiyama used to be kickass though. But now i'd go for Sony.
About the flat screen: don't think one could be possibly flatter than the other one both are flat as me when my fat aunt drops down on me. Just look for minor bugs when you're going to buy one. Turn the monitor on and off for a few times and see if the colors change.

If you can afford the Sony then get the Sony. IIyamas are a nice second, but I think Sony makes the best monitors. |

My friend has a flat screen Sony Trinitron and he loves it. If you want reviews go to http://www.anandtech.com and compare.

Doesn't the Sony Flatscreen and Trinitron monitors have those fucking aperture grill shadows or whatever the hell they are?
I've seen a Iiyama 19in model at a friends house - which he uses for extreme gaming - and it kicks ass. If I had a choice, I'd go with Viewsonic though - Thay are hands down some of the best monitors available. |

Frankly I enjoy the Hitachi's the most, but Iyaama's are second, then Sony's. I don't like a perfectly flat screen-make me feel like it's concave! I had to use one once for awhile, and I never got used to it. That and that damn wire going across the screen! ^_^

Well..besides being company-biased and liking it just for the overall design of the monitor.. you should at least know how monitors work.. (in decide to buying one) they all dont have specs for nuttin ya know :P
*Big screen always helps, provided u got the desktop real-estate (space) to sit it on :P
*Flatter is better.
*Rule of thumb for dotpitch=smaller the better
*An Aperture Grill display quality is better than the other kind.. (shadow mask i think)
*And like danny pointed out.. goto the store and see with yer own eyes :P
thats just probably all u need to know.. i dont wanna go into the whole CRT electrogun.. etc :P
ive been looking at that sony gdm f-500 too.. it is kickass.. wish i could afford it.. im in need of a new monitor too.. am i the only one still with a curved surface? :P

well.. what can i say?
*bigger is better..... hmm, not necessarily true.
21" - big, also heavy as a damn bitch.
if you have Matrox G400 DualHead video card, go for 2 17" monitor i would say!
(I personally would love to go for 2 19" LCD FLAT PANNEL, just i just don't have that kind of the money )
Sony is a real good brand, after all, they've been making TV sets and MONITOR for quite a long while now. But don't luck yourself in with it. Consider other brands as well, ViewSonic for example, they aren't as bad as Sony or NEC or any other good brands. I have a ViewSonic PF775 myself, and ofcourse like any other computer user would say.. "I LOVE IT!"
consider your option, and your wallet, and go for it. (remember to look (& stare) at the screens carefully that is available in the stores, make some comparisons.)
hope this helps

Greetings,
Well, excuse me for bringing this thread up after a few days, I went sailing for a week and have just returned...
what I wanted to say is:
I have an IIYAMA MF8617E, a 3 (or so) year old 17 incher. Yes it's pretty nice and it offered the best bang for the buck, but:
* IT'S NOT SHARP ENOUGH IN 1280x1024 *
You can switch and paint for a little while but for reading explorer text it's not sharp enough (you have to use larger fonts but you still notice the "unsharpness"). Now this may sound like it's a crap monitor. Not at all, I've seen a bunch of new cheap 17 inchers, they're worse.
My suggestion: (like many others) Go see for yourself, do this - switch to the resolution you want to work in, max out the contrast and observe.
Farewell,
voyager7

Well I've been away for a couple of days too. But what your saying is intresting, you have a 17 INCH IIYAMA and it's not sharp at that resolution?
Well I have a Compaq V75 monitor, that's why I want to buy a new one. It's good though, in 1024*768*32bit*85Hz But I really want to set it up to 1280 - 32-bit - 100 Hz, or even 1600*1200, so I need a new graphics card too. I have a Diamond Viper V550 16MB VRAM, but that's another issue.
When I set the contrast of my Compaq V75 monitor to maximum, the details (like tekst) in the corners start to blur, so I can't set my contrast to maximum. After all, Compaq isn't really 'the-professional-monitor-brand'.
But I am going to compare both the Sony and IIYAMA monitors in a store soon. But you can really notice the difference when you work on a monitor for about a week, not by starring to both monitors in a store for 5 minutes. But I'll do it anyway.
I find it surprising that Sony IS a lot more expensive then IIyama. Is Sony that superior to IIyama to meet up that difference in price. Well that's the whole issue for me for placing this topic, isn't it?
Guido. |
