Heej Daren,
cool to see you drop in!
Dino's? Bring 'em on mate. I'd be happy to drop the hair in favor of some more scales and wrinkles. You know where to find me..

Uh
What a great work.
MMM, she reminds me a lot to a "porcelan toy" (mistakes?). Try to look at her eyes during 2 minutes, and yeah, youll be afraid...I love illustrations where the apparent beauty, is the really danger..
Yeah, as someone posted, Too beauty to be true : )
Maybe like Luis Royo Illustrations?

hmmm......
I love it, very nice work , and can't wait to see the finished poster. It sounds like it will be grand..... and yes I think that this photo ref....deal has been going on for a long time.
As a matter of fact weren't you starting a tutorial on using photo ref spooge?
I would have to agree I liked Fallens work, until someone posted the thread where he said that he traced the photos, thinking that they would be in correct proportion by tracing a photograph.
It's no wonder some of the faces looked a little odd. I think hennifer put it correctly when he said thatit looked like he painted the features and then the head around it...or something like that
Well sorry about that I also started a new thread on this subject as well, if anyone would like to make any comments, as they would be greatly appreciated! |

I hate commenting on pics like yours. They are SOOOOO excellent. I feel guilty pointing out the teeny errors I see. First off, the picture itself is really well done, practically photorealistic. I especially like the way you made her eyes, it seems she is staring right at me. The few things that would make the picture even better would be the following.
1. The edge of the nose is too smooth. I would sharpen it a bit and make small curve.
2. Her ears seem to be missing. I don't know how to implement them into the pic, actually you don't really need them.

Hi Danny. Nice seeing you posting again.
I've always liked your sense of detailing
and sharpness, something i tried with the guy and the alien pic i posted way back.
I just got one comment. The face looks a bit too smooth, i don't know if it has something to do with the lack of detail on the skin like you mentioned.

*drool* ... huh? wa? oh, right, I was going to type something.
First off. what resolution is the full image? This is an amazing amount of detail for an idea that seems like it'll be quite vast.
I have a problem with the lips ... something just feels off about them. A little too perfect, and it seems like it's shifted to the right some off from the rest of the face. It could be the nose, though, that's actually making it look mis-centered.
The irises look fake, though I'm guessing those will be played with more later. There's usually more going on in an iris than what you have in those... they're too "perfect."
The entire image has a clay look to it. A kind of powdery smoothness. While I understand that'll change a little with the skin details, I noticed this in the eyes too, especially in the left eye. Most of the face has a substantial amount of catch light on it, but that eye goes inexplicably dark when it should be catching the light even more so than the skin. Perhaps some minor reflections on the eye would help as well? (yeah, I'm a detail freak too.)
Apart from that, cripes man! The work I've seen from you from the demo days (I assume you're the same danny, similar style) always had me wondering if it was just an altered photo. Beautiful stuff.

Looks very nice Danny. Though we have very different styles and different work, it's very refreshing to see your images.
I guess when you do something as clean as you choose to do, that is also why it's easier to see what don't look totally "real" . -If you know what I mean.
like people mentioned..
The skin can look a bit to plastic-like. it might be a bit with the shading and details, but it can also be that it don't have that much underlying colors and different textures. like some parts are more rough and some more smooth and wet (kind of like a specularmap in 3d )....
Also, two other things , I noticed the the upper lip looks a bit too bright compared to the contrasts in the rest of the face, makes it a bit flat. And the the nostril part also look a bit "strange" because it's less details in the shadows, which makes it look like it's a connection all around the hole....hmm, don't know if I explained that good enough ?!?
But, like I said, this is just fiddling work, because it's very easy to always spot small things when it's that clean.
About what spooge said about reference, hehe. I think I've mentioned before that that's not my cop of tea. But, it doesn't mean that I don't respect a well made picture like yours. I think what Drew Struzan does is awesome, when he combind lotsa photos and imagination and makes great covers with such a good composition, something I personally will never be able to do. And, I also think there's a great deal of learning and helpful things about use photos to work out a picture. But in my very personal opinion, I don't think it's something an artist should be too attached to, just so that the knowledge can be teached and interpret to be used in other situations except for that certain image.
this was not pointed against you Danny or anyone, just my insignificant little opinion
btw, too bad you don't have a scanner, I would love to see the photo, out of curiousity on how you think and work
Again, great picture !! And, make sure to post the finished version.

Just curious, where did the original come from? If it was a popular source (like the latest issue of Vogue, for instance), I'm sure someone else could lay their hands on it and get a copy up on the web. Not to mention I'm always curious about where other artists go for their inspiration. |
