this is a painting ive been working on today, using the airbrush only (i used the paintbrush for making rough colorguide backgrounds though)... id like some feedback because this is a different type of image for me to make, and theres a big style difference in what i usually do...the airbrush seems to make everything look alot different then the paintbrush..

anyway, its of a ravaged futuristic "terraformer" colony on some distant planet :/

as you can see im not done, i drew in really quick guidelines in the background to help with perspective a little...

so post some feedback :]

You should probably block everything in before you start adding any detail. I find it much easier to paint if all the white has been covered.

Nice. Reminiscent of Blade runner, though I do find that garage door thingy a bit out of place. Plus the structure for the colony buildings seem a bit too generic ya know?

the airbrish is foreign to you. that is how i feel to the paintbrush. It is like coloring with markers, not paint. But I work with alot of mask channels. Try messing around with putting different objects on their own layers. (if you don't already do that) that way you can play with the sharpness of the edges or the focus of distant objects. Just some ideas to play with...

psst... psi, tell me the best option setting for the paintbrush? (size, color, opacity) know most is per user, but i'm still in "ahh" over the blending technic to get the strokes out the images.

Dude...for some reason this picture looks f**ed up. It's probably the 1 point perspective, but I could be wrong. And I agree with the fellow talking about roughing in color first instead of moving location to location. By first either blocking in tones or starting with a middletone background you can get a true sense of how the colors relate to each other. Right now the values in this piece look muddled and even though it is a rainy scene you should still be able to make out some considerable contrast. Take the ground, for example. Before you concern yourself with drawing in the splashes made from the raindrops, make sure you have a level tone that denotes a flat (or semi-flat surface) THEN go in and noodle the detail (little imperfections and variations in hue and value) I could go on, but my own PS project is calling me!!!!!

hmm what looks odd is that the motion blurred noise texture on the building does not care that there is the edge of the building.. maybe you should work on the pic a bit more. I agree that the white should be blocked away first, its hard to judge the picture this way..

Hey, things is working again.

I was just getting ready for the whateveritis tomorrow and going through my old underwear drawer and just could not take it anymore.

PSI, I guess I fall into the block it in first camp. The more you cn simplify your image, or make it work with less detail, the more impact it will have. The "art" come from the basic design, not the picky details

That is really nice once again Craig. Soft, ambiant and diffused light... yet, very clear... sort of depressing when you think you do this in 10 minutes and probably think it's a joke when I couldn't half as good in 3 hours work. Still, lots to be learned here I guess for me... thanks, =)

i cant seem to break this habit of making everything look flat that i draw

spooge, that image is awesome, i'll use that as a guideline for putting more content into the image before i nitpick about details

psi burn:
I think it looks a bit too soft. If youre using the airbrush a lot, then mask more areas in order to maske it sharper. I can see
some areas that are too soft and others that are too sharp. Keep a good balance
hope this can help.Another thing is that it's better to quickly work through the whole picture befor starting to work on the finer deatails. I used to do that myself and
very often the picture suffered because of it. Be careful with having big contrast differences going on. It usually make it flat. Good luck with the pic

Spooge: Wow. That looks so real, difuse, still sharp.Did you use any referance?

psi: I beleive it's far far more important to develop the mood of a picture and the base shapes with the right values and hues than it is to add pixel-perfect details on something that lacks visual balance and design in the first place. Playing with colors, shapes and lighting in very vague forms is a very very good exercise.

(not that I'm pretending to know anything about that.=)

cheers,
frost.

hehe. Yeah Craig is Spooge. It's hard to tell sometimes when he puts the black horn-rimmed glasses back on and steps back out of the phonebooth.

Plunk, another for the Spooge dir. I'd have to agree that this one is even better than usual, which is pretty amazing.

Haha. Psi, Spooge IS Craig Mullins. The same thing happened to me at first. Spooge offered to paint a version of a background I did. I said "sure," not knowing it was CM. Needless to say, I almost crapped when I saw the result.
