When i scanned a greyscale picture from a warhammer book i got strange shades in it, i know its because the image consists of thousands of small dots (i dont know the term for it in english, is it posturizing?) And there is a function in the scanner program that prevents this but not to 100%.
Now what i want to know is if there is any technique in photoshop that can be used to erease this problem, if so how?

If you post the scan, I can probably give you some pretty detailed advice. (I've got a very low-quality scanner. I've learned a LOT of tricks for making scans look nice. ;) |

The problem you are experiencing is called a morei. That is spelled wrong, but it sounds like it looks. It is caused by one of two things, the first is a constant. THe images we see in all print is done in a dot pattern. The DPI or dots per inch, in your settings takes this into account for your print, the smaller the number, the bigger the dot gain. A 72 dpi image is going to have bigger dots, as a result, more info is lost to equate the dot size and what specific colors fill the dot of the CMYK print scale, or cyan, magenta, yellow and k=black.
The second problem you are having is that your image is not square on the scanner, and because of this the dots are not uniform, but slightly diagonal, and that will run alot of interfierence(sp) in the image as well.
The steps I take to control this are:
1. scann image in at at least 600 DPI, I can do it with 200 DPI but it takes a bit more work.
2. Put a blur more on the image.
3. use unsharp mask, this is a filter mostly used for deinterlacing frame grabs, but it helps in print as well. set the amount to 50 % and the radius to 1 pixel. This will help bring back contour in edge without bringing back too much of the dot pattern.
4. Apply a smart blur to this, if you have photoshop 5, otherwise in any other version, just hit blur more, it is nothing like smart blur, but helps do a similar treatment.
Good luck |

You know, another thinh that helps against moir patterning (seems french to me, in which case it is certainly not pronounced 'morei' ) is to scan whatever it is you're scanning at an angle instead of aligning it with the sides of the scanner.

Someone (smart) should really write an extensive tutorial on scanning. I think that, that word 'morei' is moire , I just saw it written somewhere I dont use my scanner that much and I just copped on I can scan 800dpi upwards when I set the actual size to 20% or whatever. Before I was restricted to 400dpi(AMD200,48mb) If this does spark somebody off to write a tutorial please tell people how to get colours like Cyan to come out right(or is that just me, who has that problem).
Also to Frost: That Smart Blur tool, can be good but I've found most of the time, if I set its strength enough to make a visual difference it makes everything look plastic and weird looking.
If anyone knows of any good scanning tutorials .. please post the URL

I like scanning at twice the desired resolution then cutting it back down to to where you want it in Photoshop. I find this works wonders at removing moir effects...

Another trick to remove moir is to place the image at about 2-4mm above the scaner glass. to do this make a little frame around the image so that the image is lifted a little. This trick really helps.
BTW:Affected's method is very useful sometimes. Try the motion blur filter (from the top to bottom) with vary little values and then downsample the image to the desiered resolution;-))

you know when you look in computer magazines, and they show the newest printers available, and usually show you an example of the kind of print quality they make? well, ever wonder what printer those COMPUTER MAGAZINES are using? i mean, they're obviously the best ones available, especially since they can accurately print printed examples from other printers. blah. tongue tied.
they should put those bad boys on the market. |
