if I were you, I would spend 2 weeks griding the human anatomy in. That's what I've been doing. Get a book about bones and muscles and how they function. It will seriously improve your skills by far as it has mine.

Two weeks on anatomy wouldn't do that much on me.. I've got learn to draw first, and then I'll concentrate on anatomy and other fine touches. I wished there was someone teaching there around my place during evenings. I can't find a course or anything.
I'll post this same image with some little variations.

that looks like a sketch you'd see on a disney animation conceptual board

theres nothing really "wrong" about it...i mean, if thats the style of painting you're going for, then its good. but if you're going for a more realistic/serious look, you'd need some work.

Tanis-glad to see you posting art...I guess you might want to ask more specifically what you need with the image, and what the image is going to be used for.
FIrst, if it just something for you to practice, with a fantasy twist to it, I might suggest using a photograph of someone in a similar pose that you can modify the surface to get more what you are looking for. For example, you need a pin up of Superman, you have no idea how to draw anatomy, but you have an idea for a pin up. You go t o the muscle mags to find something that looks like your pose, only this dude has only a banana hammock on. You then take the pose, and modify it by throwing the cape and costume on the muscles represented in the photo, and hopefully create a seamless image.

With this particular image, there are a few issues, taht seem to be anatomy related more than much else. The arms for example look as though the elbows are right under the deltoid muscles, so their physical appearance looks decieving. The other place is in the abdomenal area. I would design a muscle pattern for the armor he is wearing, and not try to totally match his form. Get an anatomy book, and study it, but also use it with the image you are working on. So if it is a torso shot you are designing, open the anatomy book to torsos and use that info first hand. Make a practice image to get used to the new shapes you are creating, and then make a second one based on the first, and hopefully it will have a bit more sponteneity that the first one didn't have...

Hope this helps you out a bit, as I mentioned, get a bit more specific with what you need help with, or the crits can get a little random and may stray from what you want and need to hear.

Also, try not posting negative words, such as lame image etc. There is this little trick, that if you start something in a negative light, the end result might be negative. Begin on a positive note, and things only get better. Just speaking from experience, I am a little brutal on myself, and it doesn't get any better if I start it off so heavily weighted in the negative. Just a bit of a morale boost, sometimes more necessary than we can imagine... Post anymore specific questions you may have, and post your next iteration...good luck.

Fred: This sounds interesting. I used to work on photographs but everyone I talked with told me not to use any reference photo, but use real life people instead. I think you know how hard it is to find a place with people not moving around every single second!
Anyway, I'll try to build up something from photographs. Right now I can't find a phopto matching my pose (I scanned through my mom's magazines but nothing matching that pose.. grr!! )
I worked a bit on the image during lunch pause and I grabbed up that great Bridgeman book and looked at it while retouching the pic. I'm not going for a real life looking picture. A comic-alike pic is enough.

What can you tell me about the lighting on the figure. I always ave a hard time figuring out how to shade people. This time it's looking a bit better than usual

I'll get back to the pic this evening and post an update of it.
