These were done as "practice" for a short X-Men story I'm drawing (on spec, not as a job). I came up with them before the movie came out, although I had seen some of the photos - I was trying to go for a different look than what's been done in the comics, but also trying not to mimic the movie's look too much either.
Hope these aren't too big - I'm looking at them on a 1600 screen, so they look a little on the small side to me.

your drawings are good and colossus looks good, but you have to SERIOUSLY fix up your wolverine and magneto drawings.
you make wolverine look like a monkey, and gave him a really stocky small figure...he really isnt like that. he is short (around 5"10) but his body is carved, ripped, and toned. dont make his hands and arms look so fat. and his face really has to be revamped. you gave him a really big jaw and a huge wide head (with a huge wide mouth), when really, his head is actually narrow, and his hair shoots out. his mouth also, if anything, is long and narrow (when hes yelling). your drawing is GOOD, but you just need to work on the appearance. like any artist, you can make the best portrait anyone's ever seen, but it could look nothing like the person its based on.
also, magneto doesnt have that big jaw and scraunchy nose, he has a really dignified slim face + features. he also has long swooping hair.
this is what you get for being a comic fanatic your childhood :/ |

Actually, wolvering is 5'0 to 5'3... depends on whos describing him
thats whats you get for reading way too many comics and collections all the cards and dolls and watching the cartoons and reading the magazines that describe them.
the drawings are nice but im not in a critiquing mood right now
any comics art is good art <G>

these are real nice francis
just a few things that kind of stand out weird is wolverines jaw. and thats about it And the colored magneto and profile pencil sketch are kind of diffrent, the sketch looks buff and younger, while the colored one looks a bit thing and older, im just mentioning this cuz, well in comics you want em to look like the same person for each time you draw him(im sure u know that) and thats about it, All an all i really dig em |

I think you did a great job on wolverine. The way you drew him in the action shot is really nice. I like the big arms and hands on him. I makes him look stout and short just like a wolverine. You could probably get Glen Danzig to pose for you at the comic con. I would like to see a more serious version of Colossus. Maybae just a sketch version of him just like Wolverine and one action pose. Your art is a nice cross between jap and american comic art.
Hope you put these on your site as well with all your other great collections. |

what are you raving on about? i was merely pointing out how the characters look, i never told him "HE HAS TO DO IT MY WAY". it was helpful criticism. obviously, yes, my apologies francis, i overlooked his comment about how he wanted a different look. i dont see why you're going off about this, he surely hasnt. if you're that emotional over a comment like that, you can use more intellectual insults then "wimpering like a snortstick". i dont believe ive ever even heard of that |

I have to say this is a new take on the X-Men. (I'm an old die-hard Jim Lee fan so the absence of cross-hatching is leavin' me in withdrawl!)
BUT..as most have said it's a nice approach Francis. Please disregard Psi-burn's moronic comments. They shouldn't let certain people have access to keyboards let alone mice..hehe. It's kind of sad when people feel the need to dictate drawing style based on preconceived notions dealing with the anatomy of comicbook characters. With the exception of his stature, lambchops and obvious Pizza cutters the sky is the limit.
The ONLY thing I would make a comment on would be the metallic look of Colossus at the moment. It might just be the middle tone background you used but he seems to be in dire need of a Turtle-wax rub down!
Good stuff though...keep it comin'. |

Whoa.
psi - it's a different take, all right. Loved wolverine way back when I first saw him, but have gotten tired of the overexposure.
I definitely was going for more of a literal "wolverine" look, kind of small and feral. I was also hoping to get a little bit of the "scruffy ronin" look that Toshiro Mifune perfected in several period samurai movies with Kurosawa, but I'm not sure how successful that was. Yeah, I overdid the jaw a bit. Fred has already abused me a bit for that one.
burnout, they were just done on 11x14 marker bright white marker paper and p'shopped.
synj, thanks for gettin' my back. No biggie tho - x men are pretty holy to a lotta people. Rad animated deal.
salty - yes.

All that comes to mind is "have ya got any more"......... I can't get enough sketches.
Those lines are pretty slick. Hard to use such stiff angular lines and still keep it alive. Fantastic stuff. I do have trouble with a couple of the hands tho.
My fingers are twitching here, tying to keep them from writing out some stuff about the X-men that would heat up this thread
I'm serious though, have you got any more? Someone should post a new topic were everyone can put up their sketches.
Mmmmmmmm.... those lines!...

hehe poor psi!
geeze guys!
in some respect he's right, to have it look anything like wolvie the things he mentions are right, its a new take and all thats cool, its hard to get used to hehe i think the jaw is fine BLAH hehe looks cartoony so its allowed, i, personally would have chosen a different nose, but this is your take so thats cool, i can see where psi thinks he looks like a monkey, but bah who cares cause this is most likely based off the movie right?
Thats why im not bitching about magnetos hair either, anyways, the new haircut makes him more refined, dignified and he looks like a kick ass bad guy, i like magneto the way you drew him, very cool.
colossus looks like... hes really tame hehehe and yeah he needs to be shiny! glinty! blinding his foes with his chrome!
storms face looks a little scrunchy and shes really tame looking. IMO <<< take note of that. i dont wanna get burned by everyone like psi heheh. imo you got the skin colour perfect tho, meow.
hehe oh yeah and xavier looks like a pansy i think its the eyelashes. he needs the evil menacing ill kick your ass cause im the boss, eyes
but you know, im sure my opinion doesnt count for much, but your sketches are awsome my favorite one is the colour one of magneto, and i would love to see you do perhaps.... jean grey? or JUBILEE! or gambit! yeah! or you make up your own characters cause i love your sketch style, ive been trying to sketch like you do for years... anyways, onto everyone flaming me hehe for telling you how to draw, which i wasnt doing... but yeah...

It's great to see a new spin on such a popular and admired creation. Francis, stick to your guns with the redesign look, you have an excellent style that is your own. It is also an appealing style. I am interested in seeing what you come up with. This is exactly what the comic industry needs, a new perspective on things, sure you run into the whole style guide and licensing aspects of dealing with such a well known and established subject matter as the X-Men, but since you are doing it on spec you have that luxury.
I used to be a big fan of comics, the X-MEN in particular, but I have become so sick of the mundane take on such a unique commodity. I guess that applies to all comics, in my opinion. I support you (as if that makes a difference) with what you are doing, because at this point I could care less about what's being done in comics, perhaps a new spin may spark my interest once again.
good luck Francis, as you see you are up against a lot of opposition.
Change wolverine, how dare you!!!!!!! just kidding!
One comment watch things like the distortion in areas like Colossus' face the right side (the side further from us the viewer, doesn't seem to follow the perspective of the body mass, it looks as if he is raising his eyebrow as if he is thinking) If that was intentional, then good job, but as a static portrait, it sort of looks odd.
Otherwise, good job, you definitely have a fan in me! Can't wait to see your next update post!

They are good sketches but they do not capture character. I have been a hardcore comic fan and I am draw fairly well, but I can't show any pics because I don't have a scanner at the time. Wolverine is STOCKY but he is quite ripped and muscular. He has sharp facial features and sometimes looks like a villain. Magneto is dark and old, yet he has strength and power. Try to draw him like one would draw M. Bison from street fighter. Wolverine would look a lot like the wrestler Ken Shamrock with a different hair style. |

Hehe, you guys....francis and fred. You don't post art for a while, and suddenly you burst in with 2 or 3 threads full of stuff
Nice character sketches. Especially I like the one top right. The way it seems like he bites his underlips. Don't know if that's intentional, but it's a difficult expression to make on purpose
The others are nice too, but some of them, especially the girls, are maybe a bit too blocky shaped in their face....maybe just my taste
Really nice hands and fingers btw.

I love your artwork Francis, I just have a couple of things about wolvie
He looks more like beast to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the art, just I'm an old X-diehard. His hair should be a bit taller like his mask.
I love the magneto drawings and xavier is looking nice too.
Keep up the amazing work! |
