I am back from hawaii and then vacation, if that makes any sense.

I saw a few threads ago ceenda was interested in 20000 leagues under the sea and visualizing things. I like the book, and seeing that sub in the movie with the portals lit under the water, too cool. So I thought I would try a nemo, but it is not very successful. I had in mind a man that was not a traditional capn, or a traditional boot chin thyroid freak, but someone who could singlehandedly fight a squid and invent nuclear propulsion. hmmm...

Sometimes creativity is not so much pulling someting out of a vacuum, but putting something down and it suggest where to go next. It helps to stay loose in the beginning. If sit down to draw and arm, you are already limiting yourself. Scribble, through some ink on it, bury it in the backyard. Resist the urge to draw a thing. When you have interesting shapes down, look a it, flip it rotate it, whatever, maybe there is something there. Eventually something will emerge, but you have to have the patience to let it. Don't render until much later.

This is only one way to go about it. I like to be creative in my process, I find that leads me to places I would have never been to otherwise. Sitting down with a 6h pencil and rubbing your temples doesn't work more than a few times.

When visualizing, or in any creative thing, you have time up front to be creative. So let anything fly, don't judge, just get it out. Then when the buzzer goes off, weed out and judge.

Great work man, really love the lighting on his face. Only thing i don't get : I assume he doesn't have a razor since he's like on the bottom of the ocean and has a beard like mozes and shit. But how did he shave his hair??

Here is one of my rough sketches of Nemo (not as good as yours though). I am trying to aim for a mix between James Mason and Sean Connery from The Hunt for Red October.

Very beautiful face. The colors remind me of some work I just saw by an illustrator named Gregory Manchess.
The face makes me think of Repin, or of Joseph Clemens Cole colored. The tip of the nose is crooked, but I am assuming this is because of the spontaneousness of the image.
Gawd I love those colors. Glad to know you didn't find Greg Brady's Kahuna cave, or get sucked out to see by the Perfect Storm Brah...6 weeks in Hawaii eh? I need a vacation like that, I think inspiration can be found in an outing like that.
I couldn't agree with you more with what you have said about creativity. I try all the time to tell my students to get over the everything right the first time, or everything I draw has to be perfect syndrome. First, this is incredibly limiting. Second, it doesn't allow one to find anything new, or something fresh that no one else has seen before, and you never know, one of your happy accidents may lead the image in a stronger, more developed direction.
There seems to be a big misunderstanding that all great artists do all great art, all the time. Most great artists have had there collections weeded out, with the bad stuff destroyed. All we get to see are the best of what they did, or what they sold. When we, the inexperienced look through a book of someones art, we assume that this is how everything they dsid came out. As a result, people tend to shy away from scribbling, doodling, letting the hand go. I saw some original Michelangelo pages out of one of his sketch books, and wow, they were amazing. From tight finished works, to neurotic scribbles that actually inspire idea. This stuff is so important for the "PRO" to do to find new thoughts and ideas, but we are abscent of this information, or have always been told to stop scribbling, and make something that looks good.
Tooting the horn, away I go now, and since I have just now gotten moved in, expect to see the long overdue part two to both tutorials soon...peace

If you watch Pavorotti sing Nessum Dorma in the 3 Tenor's concert(I forget if it's the Caracalla or LA one), right at the end he has a similar expression on for a split second. Very nice, I still don't know how you punks can paint in Photoshop, it just doesn't make sense. ^_^

Hey everyone thanks for the welcome back! I am glad people seem to like this one. I have been very busy in Hawaii working on the Final Fantasy movie. Hawaii is supposed to be warm, relaxing and sunny? To me it was cold(air-conditioning), stressful, and dark (computer rooms). I went on vacation later. I won't have anything new to show until FF is released. These little sketches I do to keep my interest up is all that I can leak out.

There is a pretty big changeover here since I left. Many old faces gone but a lot of new ones.

Yes, I use masks all the time in PS. I don't think I did in this image, though.

Strange as it may seem, I did think about the radical difference in style between the beard (unkempt) and perfect short hair. Nemo is a contrast of rebel and perfect discipline. I could see him and his crew having both elements in aspects of dress and uniform. How�s that for a BS made up answer? I have to practice here before I try my skills with a real AD No, really, it was intentional.

I think the sweat and dirt is a bit of a stretch myself. A nuclear powered boat is not similar to a coal powered one in any way. That's license I guess.

Fred, could you explain those references to other illustrators a bit more. I have not heard of them. I know who Tesla is (the guy who invented squirrel flavored cheese), but not the others.

Wow Fred.. I really like what you said about not trying to get everything right the first time and how the work we see from the artists we admire is often a selection of the finest. I know I have a tendency to aim for perfectionism from the word go. Certainly can get in the way of creative exploration.. Well spoken and something to think about..
