This is off topic I know but I really need help:

After a crash I CANNOT access my computer anymore.

I can start up to the login screen (Win98).

If I enter my (the right) password, the systen does not recognize it any more, and I cannot do anything anymore (POLEDIT rights are reduced for all but me, but now I cannot use my password any more and so I have no rights at all...) There is only one Profile configured on the computer and thats mine.

Can anyone help me here or tell me sources where I could get help? I really need it because there are important files on that computer I have to access (for work..)

I am really fucked up..

So is there a way to change the user rights/ logon passwords from dos or from the old registry?

Please help!

You could eithe post or email me at [email protected]

thanks--

I would say that you try and get an extra drive and copy all the files in dos.
And then make a new windows installation.
maybe get win2k? =)
Or did you use a encryption program?
well..try that in dos. that should work.

Press F8 when it says 'Starting Windows98...'
->
DOS mode
->
Copy the files you need to a disk or something...

OR

Press F8 when it says 'Starting Windows98...'
->
Safe mode
->
while in safe mode, run poledit and remove all restrictions...

Uhm.. hit Esc?? Its Win98 not NT. After you hit escape it should load the default profile. Then go to: Start - Find Files. Search for *.pwl and delete the file. Reboot.

Slicer: that would be an idea but I would loose all configurations and mails etc..

29A: I will try again with save mode and poledit but I think he searches for *.adm or *.pol files, neither of them are present on my harddisk..

Chapel: the default profile has resticted rights (not allowed to modify programs etc..) and automatic shutdown. This is what happens when I type my password.. I just get into the default mode and cannot do anything..

I will try that with poledit now.. and I pray that it works..

In secured mode the restrictions are still active, that means I cannot start any programs (including poledit).

There should be some commant in the registry to change the restrictions but I don't know where it could be or if thats really true.

Where are all those hackers when you need them..

Any other suggestions ..?

go into DOS mode and goto your Windows directory. Delete all files that have a .PWL extension --> That deletes all the passwords for Windows on your computer.

Reboot and enter a new password.

Thanks Synax but the problem is not with the PWL file (my password is accepted) but with the user right associated with my profile. They have somehow switched to default by the computer crash.. and default means i cannot start programs or delete files (even in secure mode).

Thanks anyway for trying to help

im taking a shot in the dark because ive never used or heard of "poleedit", but is your computer at work? if so, did someone in a higher position install the software on your computer? why not just try contacting that person, or ask them to change the restrictions on your computer back to the customary level..?

if this is a personal computer of yours, why would you install such software! its not needed especially if its a home cpu.

*cough* win2k *cough*
hehe
here is what u could try... boot delete all poledit registry (or whatever u use to make all those restrictions) then boot into yer secondary version, delete all the files from poledit.... and yer problems should be gone (the problem would be, if the restrictions wont let u delete registry... but if it does it should be somewhere in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software...
also check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ and here it stores all the stuf that autoboots with windows... delete whatever u dont want (like the program that causes the restrictions) and it will simply not load) and if this helps, just do yer stuff and go find something better to protect yer comptuer with
*cough* win2k *cough*
or if you got loads of time on yer hands... try linux =)

poledit customer service ?

Poledit is a tool from microsoft on the WIN98 CD.

I think they know that win98 is crap already, I don't have to tell them
You never get reples from microsoft anyway..

Shadow:

Well win2k I don't know.. I think I will rather go to NT 4.. I 've heard some very weird stories about 2k.

and for your tip:

Is there a way to access the registry from one computer from another position? Where is the registry stored in (what filename, extension?)

If I find this out I could change it from my second windows version.

What would help me too would be a way to get my old outlook mails (sent mails/received mails) into my current "second version" Windows.

Thanks anyway guys

the registry is part of the current operating system. if you have windows installed twice, its not installed in once accessible area, its installed the the other copy of windows on your computer.
