Greetings every1!
I am a new member, so this is the first time I write to this forum...
For my first picture I took a (low-quality, low-res) picture of Saw-Boss from a 80's-cartoon site (remember Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors?). I choose this picture because I thought it was a good one to start with (because if you look at it, it's just very simple). I blew it up to about 1500x1200 pixels and went across the define lines. After I traced the whole image, I started to colour it. As you can see I tried to give it some lightning and shading effects, but I don't know if I'm doing it right. If I look to the image now, I know it take's a lot more to finish it, but I really don't know how, neither where to start. De black lines really disturb me. In the 'how-to' section on the sijun.com site, I read about 'smudging' the 'sketch-lines', but it seems I really can't pull it off. Everytime I try, it looks like I'm better of by just keeping the sketch lines, but that is not what I want. Please help me out. The 'how-to' section was really helpfull to me, but it looks I'm stuck now...
I hope some1 has the answer or can just edit this .jpeg a little, for an example.
Greetings,
Guido
The Netherlands.

You don't learn anything from tracing...
[Edit : But if it's your first image, you're excused...just remember that it's much better to not trace for the future .]

OMG! I totally forgot about that cartoon. I used to watch it every morning. You get bonus points just for bringing back memories.
I wish I could help you more on your drawing, but I don't really use that style (with the black outlines). I'm sure someone will pop in with some tips, though.

To be honest, this is my very first 'brush-work' or whatever you want to call it. I know I still have a lot to learn, well almost everything I supose, because I never really used Photoshop to Illustrate something like this. The reason that I traced the image is because I think I have to take small steps. I traced the image and tried to give it a 3d look. I thought that was easier to begin with, then drawing a whole new character and build it up from scratch. After all, I'm not an illustrator, but am very intrested in it though... |

Here I try to smudge the skecth lines again, but it just doesn't look right. I really need some professional advice. If some1 can adit the image and post it in the forum again, will be the best solution I think.
Please help me out... |

it's hard to know how to shade a figure if you don't understand the shapes that make up that figure. if you're tracing an image then you probably don't have that understanding, and you'll end up with shading that distorts the body.
if you're looking to learn a lot, try drawing the same character in a pose of your own, and check out some books/sites on anatomy to help you out. if you search the forum here, i'm sure you can find tons of good resources to get started.
good luck!

Hey Occultic
I Think the first pic is okay as is, becasue it has that manga/cell-animation simplicity.
You however seem to want to work the pic up a bit so that it is more solid and three dimensional.
To my eyes the problem you are having is one of purpose. It is very hard to stop looking at something as line if you start off that way, or if you are used to drawing in a comic book style. There is nothing wrong with tracing as long as you realise it won't help you all that much. It is good for working on your rendering skills as opposed to you drawing skills. Dhabih's tutorial uses fainter lines that are more "sketchy" you are using thick black lines more akin to finished ink work than construction lines, this is why smudging is not having the same effect. If the lines are on a different layer then just throw them away (or hide them) and start putting down values, to delelope a light-source. for instance the head should be casting a shaddow etc.
If you really want me to I can do a re-draw but it would be better if someone like fred did it.
I'm not sure how competent you are with photoshop so if you dont understand anything I've said give us a yell.

Hello Rinaldo,
Yes I understand the most of what your are saying. Ik think I can call myself an advanced Photoshop user, but I am not an advanced illustrator (too bad). I'm not a good illustrator at al, but really want to be. If you want to re-draw 'Saw-Boss', I would be very, very pleased. I'm very currious what it will look like. I think I can learn a lot from that, besides, it's a fun charracter to draw.
Danny--> So your from The Netherlands too? You like trance? You probebly go to The ArenA tonight (www.sensation.nl)???
I don't know from which site I got the Saw-Boss image, but here are some Urls:
* http://www.adequate.com/mini-site/WheeledWarriors/toys.html
* http://dei.dyn.dhs.org/~cindy/wheelies
Funny, this whas the only cartoon from that period that hadn't got a toys-line.
Guido.

There do were toys, see my first Url. But they never made it to The Netherlands I supose...
This is a good Url too: http://pages.ivillage.com/misc/rootarchive/main.html
But back to Rinaldo,
Who is Fred? I'm new here, so would you be so kind to ask him if he can re-draw the Saw-Boss Character too?
OuT-A-hErE
Guido.

well, if you're an advanced photoshop user, but you lack illustration skills, then i'd say the illustration is what you should focus on. of course it's going to be difficult and a lot of work, but there's no shortcut to learning how to draw. you have to start at the beginning.

Ok.... this the sort of direction I would take
I dont really know what the character looks like (hey I live in Australia, they dont have anyhitng over here). So I have gone with a dark lighting setup. I know this is sorta cheating but ohh well . the guy is supposed to be mean an nasty (I think?), so it sorta fits anyway.
I haven't gone into any great detail, just established the important bits so it's a tad messy
I'm sure others could do better, but I hope it helps anyway.

Wow! That looks really great! At first I thought it was a bit messy and maybe it is. But I have to admit, the expression is much better then my version. If it had only more detail...
But thanxz again, I hope this inspires some more of you to try and build your own Saw-Boss...
I would be happy to see some more versions...
Guido. |

Speaking about 80's cartoons, The Transformers were probably the best. Anyway, I thought let's have a look on the Decepticon logo, just to bring back memories.
Wow, isn't it a good idea to illustrate Megatron, in a real evil way?

booya! 80's cartoons fans!
I gotta draw some of my favorite G1 bots. oh that's right, I tried and failed. I didn't do poor Grimlock justice.
I did draw Unicron which turned out alright even though it was from memory and not exactly accurate.
and here's a pic of a female Sharkticon (Queen?) that I sketched out a design of. (yeah I know it sucks)
allow me to prove I don't draw that roughly all the time.
Chaotic's Cult Classics: ART Gallery
I got a few more... female Ravage... one female bot (not designed to transform), one attempted female Corvette, one attempted female Devastator...
oh yeah, two pics of TM2 Black Arachnia, 1 with TM2 Dinobot. (I should probably scan those) |

Hmmm...the Transformers......*sniffle* *sniffle*...good ol' memories...
I prefer the episodes which were in Space, starring whole different (and much cooler) robots...
Oh, and that movie, is that the movie were a lot of Transformers are killed in the end? It's a liitle bit blur to me but I can remember Goldbug was eaten by a monster or something...And other robots who were dropped in a big "pool" with hot stuff so they melted...
Am I right?! Is that the transformers movie?

I created the Decepticon logo in 3D and animated it. I know this isn't the Forum for 3D animations, but since I created the Decepticon logo in Photoshop, I wanted to try and animate it in a simple loop.
