Q3A intros and Tier movies were done in 3D studio max. Cuse thats what Paul Steed has been teaching himself for a long time.
And if you can belive this. The Quake 2 intro(Yes I said Quake 2.) Was done on a 486 system running Windows NT running 3D Studio Max. Paul Steed came from Origin before id and he was acustum to opening sceens and story telling parts to games. id was aginst, from the beginning of Quake 2, to have any cutsceens. But Paul kept plugging away on his 486 at the opening idea he had. When he finished the sceen(Around the end of the Quake 2 project.) He showed Carmack and the guys again and they ended up liking the opening alot.
So if you got some dedication, you can work with Studio Max on any system running NT. Although I hear the newest version works on 98 I think.
Awsome and powerful program if you can learn it well. Start now if you love doing it. Another spectacular company to look at for 3D studio max cutsceens is Blizzard. (I belive they use 3D Studio, correct me if I'm wrong please.) They have some awsome guys doing that stuff. |

Run Max in NT. Although Discreet says that Max runs in 95/98 it is extremely buggy and they do not provide tech support to people running 95/98 (at least the last time I checked). Windows 2K has a defect in OGL support so you probably won't get an accelorator card to work properly under it. Believe me, we've tried. As far as what Max is capable of, well,... that's entirely up to you. It's the artist, NOT THE SOFTWARE that produces great results. Max is a solid, well rounded 3D App. It's got a lot of power if you understand how to use it. If you'ld like to see what I've been able to do with Max goto www.anticz.com |

heah the q3a intro is a pile of shit.
the guy stands there while a million people shoot at him and all miss. totally doesn't reflect the mood of the game. not only that, but they used motion capture and model scanners. taking into consideration who did it with that equipment, it's horrible.

Max is robust and economic program (for what it does), but the rest is up to you.
Some of the best character animation I've seen has been done in Animation Master ($200), and some of the worst I've seen has been done in Maya ($8000).
Max falls somewhere in the middle but is a very capable program.
Opitma, 405 was done with Lightwave, not Max.

hey jHof.. 3ds max has always been able to run on 95 and 98. ive been using 3d studio since it was a dos progy. ive use max since version 1. i ran it on 95. NT is more stable, but you dont have to run it on NT. with progy's like maya and softimage you need an OS like NT |

well, if thats really your system, it'll run faster than on anything else obviously. I suggest most strongly using NT. I use Win98 and it crashes ALL THE TIME, but on WinNT, its much more stable.

Run max on NT its much more stable and supports dual processor boards.
Your system config. will be more than enough you need for MAX.. on the other side you never can have enough ram really...
Although a good hardware does not make a good movie

Before you buy (or warez) into MAX, check out Animation:Master. Its $300 and buries all other off the shelf apps for character and creature animation. It doesn't do it automatically, and you'll have to learn a lot, but A:M is a seriously powerful tool for 3D.
Some A:M examples:

My personal portfolio is in my signature.
3DS got popular because programmers liked it, not because artists did ;)
