Just a little sketch I did this evening. Wanted to give it it a fairly affected(TM) posture, and a style similar to medieval images(like in the woman's face), but still using some of the advantages of modern technology. Critiques and comments welcome-maybe someday I'll make it into a more developed painting.

Hey Anthony
I think this is groovy. I like that there is little contrast - and the style makes it look wispy and windsome...
Any references?
I'd just finish the grass and put more detail in the valley boy.
I like the valley girl a lot!
She looks like she's saying "like, oh my god, he's like, so five minutes ago..."
lol
Keep painting!

Thanks Kuriso-I like to break the modern rules of art, with contrast and perspective etc. They can get so tiresome, don't you think?

Somehow when I first looked at this picture I thought it not to be middle age but nowadays. The background looked like people looking out of the windows of a train or bus.
I think its because they wear T-shirts in the background, and those were not popular at that time.
What follows is critique.. I will be brutally honest to you, so please don't hate me for that..
The colors look very "dead". They are very pale and give it an overexposed look. Although not a "stylish" overexposure in my opinion.
The anatomy does not look bad.
I guess another problem is that there is no depth in this picture.. its totally 2 dimensional. There are 2 "planes". The first one where she is on, and the second one where everything else is on (and blurred).
The highlights on her armor do not match with the shadows she casts on the ground. There is no defined light source here.
I think its good to try to break the rules of art, but you should know what the rules are and how they work first.
You have a perception of human anatomy, try do develop further and then try to break the rules.
Cya
(hey and no offense given, just my "in your face" opinion)

OK, I'll go over it this evening if I have time and do a second in a more dirty manner.

No no Nex, I want you to be as honest as possible-I like to know the truth, good bad or ugly. The 2d look was intentional-all the paintings from back then were very 2d-you're right about the T-shirts, I just filled those guys in really fast. Thanks for the thoughts!

I'm gonna agree with Nex and the comments he made, and add a couple more.
I think one of the problems with the colors is that there isnt enough contrast between them (no darks, no lights.. all about the same tone). You probably should add some darks to add some definition or something... it will also better help define some sorta light source in the image.
