Hey guys & gals,
here's a little bg-painting that I did for the MW4 intro. It was used as a far background in a forest where the enemy Mechs are walking through. In the final shot there are 3D trees in the foreground. I just put a quickie sun in there to make it a nicer standalone image ... It's nuthin special, just a little thingy to look at.
resolution: 1600 by sumthin
time to do: forgot
was it fun: definetely yes

really nice Loki !
You have an awesome talent for backgrounds. And, I also think you have improved from some of the older ones on your sites. Now you make them rougher, but still they look more real and with a lot nicer atmosphere.
GREAT!

Nice - your style is always improving. For fun you might want to make some sunsets that aren't so...yellow. But then if you live in LA you probably don't see many of any other color. ^_^

Tony - Thanks ... what sense would it make if there was no chance to improve one's style? That's the biggest motivation.
I only wish I had more time to work on my own stuff. I've now got a killer setup at home (2 monitors, fast cards & machine and all the good stuff) but I'm taking work home instead of creating my own images.
As for the yellow - it kinda had to be the color, because it introduces a whole colorscheme. It goes from dusk to night. This shot is the first one of the intro.
Lemme see if I find my colorboards ...
btw - I lived in Hawaii and that's were sunsets are golden - here in LA they're purple because of all the smog-crap in the air ... Hawaii has the most awesome skies of all the places I lived at - in LA you sometimes don't even know if there's a sky up there ... ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/wink.gif) |

here are two of the original colorboards. I did about ten of them per day ...
These boards were mostly used for mood, color and lighting, not so much for content and details - those changed all the time anyway. It's basically a starting point where you say" yeah, pretty much like the board, but more green/people/mechs/tits/clouds/etc.'
The first one is the board for the forest shot, the second one is when the MW's get reaady to launch in the hangar. There are strong overhead lights in the hangar ...
Yeah - the dude is all wrong, I know - but I kinda like the lighting.
The sketches weren't done by myself - I worked over the story boards they gave us and changed them when necessary.
and here's the next

Oh yeah, I didn't mean a different color in this one particularly. Sunsets done here in sunny FLA are all different colors, but often gold and pink mixed together. Pretty nice.
The guy's pretty neat-as you say not technically great if you examine it closely, but then who cares about that-the overall impression is great, which is what matters, IMO. Keep it up!

what would be really cool: putting a few japanese samurai or even some ninjas running through the forest. if youve ever seen Ninja Scroll, you'll know what i mean. very cool looking though, i can definately see 2 mechs wandering through that forest scouting or something....not battling though |

Very nice work Loki, I really like the
colour boards too. Although I have to agree with psi burn that it needs more ninjas running thru the woods =D |

Thanks guys! It really means a lot to me to get such feedback from guys like you. I'm working on MW4 part of my page right now, but it'll still be a couple of days until I can put it up ...
Thanks again, and uh, the ninjas, well, they're in the image, but they're hiding behind the trees - they wouldn't be good ninjas if you were able to spot them outright, would they ?

Loki-this stuff is beautiful. Do they have you doing different color schemes for each color key? Or are you basically hitting the color scheme first time through?
I.E. Did they have you work those first trees in the morning, afternoon, night, and maybe with an otherworldly color to them etc? Just curious to see what your process is with knocking out the color keys, if they go to the same extent that an animation would to decide upon the color mood, etc...
Keep posting more, this stuff is absolutely kick ass... |

Thanks a lot, Fred! It really makes me happy that working 24/7 for 2.5 months was worth it
Anyway - since I was the art director for the whole intro, it was my choice to do colorroughs, because they saved us lots of talking around without any visual reference. I had a lot of freedom, which was a w e s o m e. So I could also pick the time of the day & transition - and I made myself do the roughs only once (I'm way too easy on myself, I know).
The approach was to have those boards for color and mood only, and even if things changed, it didn't matter if the roughs were off - at least then we knew what we DIDN'T want.
Overall I made about 40 boards. They also helped artists to set up a new scene. It was also a good prep for myself to go through and think about the whole intro.

Mm, William Wallace would be proud. ^_^ I dunno how you guys can stand painting in Photoshop-feels like you're painting with a wet noodle.
