Here's an arcticle on VFX-Pro about the master of traditional matte painting, Albert Whitlock - he died last year and this piece was written by Craig Barron (ex-ILM, Star Wars, etc. matte genius)
Btw - Albert Whitlock also painted some killer mattes for "The Thing". I mention this, because on the DVD-special edition there's an interview with him, showing reference-plates & all the other interesting goodies.

if you look around on VFX-pro, there are also articles about the history of matte painting, Illusion Arts and the dude who did the mattes for Alien Resurrection and City of Lost Children.
