OK, this is a little something I whipped up today for a friend's website. The website is TheLucidPool.com, and he wanted the sword imagery(I had a giant toadstool myself ^_^). It's lacking something though. I don't really want to put much detail into it, because I think it relies on simplicity of shapes and colors. Let me know what you think.

hmm lemme give you some fb:
In my opinion there is too much ambient light here. where does it come from? What is the light source in this scene?
The water should throw reflections on the cave wall (like in water caves..) maybe put a reflection map on the wall or raytrace it.
The handle of the sword is a bit too small.
The blade looks good but I can see steps there on the tips.. maybe use antialiasing.
Maybe put something on the walls too so they don't looks so empty.. maybe some vegetation or spiders (my favourite subject in this case).
Just work on it a bit, its not bad.

Hmm, I don't really want to add realism like the water reflections or dirt/grime/spiders, since it's inherently a sort of abstract image, in an odd way. The way the ripples creep over the rocks, etc, the focus is more on the shapes and colors. I know, maybe if I just make it a wider angle lens and throw in some negative lights to make the scene fall off the black on all sides...

I agree with what Nex says. I especially don't like the light source and the color of it. Also try putting some more details on the walls, it will make the picture so much more interesting to look at.
Also, why do the round rings that's in the water continue up on the cave floor?
Other from that I think it's nice, with a little more practice on composition and color use, you'll do great.

well some things that i would suggest is to not saturate the colours so much.. especialy the blue fog
the scene looks very plain, like nex was saying.. either add some more stuff to it or focus in on the sword more.
good start though |

I see where you guys are coming from, it's just that I do normal, realistic, commercial, etc etc, 3d all day, so this is sort of a relaxing break for me. Thanks for the thoughts guys!

OK, a little update. I think this works much better. I quit here, I don't have more time to work on it. ^_^

I hear you about working all day in one way and wanting to take a break and do something else...
I really like your final version Anthony! The colors and contrast make this a very interesting piece. Just enough atmosphere and mystery to fit the name of the website perfectly! Great job

Thanks Kurisu-I appreciate it! I changed it to CMYK color since you posted-hopefully the more earthtone blue(if such a thing is possible) will make the real artists here happy. ^_^
