I really love micke's b&w art and have wanted to try doing some myself. I'd tried before, but just never really had anything to draw. This image actually, oddly enough, started out as the now demonized "cube" from Fred's tutorial when I got the idea of drawing a guy "stuck" in the cube. Well, needless to say, the cube disappeared, and this is all that's left.

The legs look like they're a bit (hah!) too long, and the lighting is far from being correct... but I like the hair and the forarm (especially the hand). All in all, it took me about 45 minutes; I tend to "tweak" too much.

somebody just got inspired.. i don't think we should discourage ppl doing art that is influenced by others.. let them develop their own style at their own pace.. but i think.. cyberartist has achieved his own style.. saw his potrait some time ago.. just experimenting with different style.. ehh..

I don't mind the artwork, but I'm just tired of everyone thinking micke invented this style. No offense to micke (his stuff is great), but there are other artists that have been making this style of artwork for a long time. Jae Lee and Frank Miller are the first to spring to my mind.

nontextualmatter: That was probably the most immature thing I've ever heard.

I agree with synj to an extent. However, I like to see people branching out from their regular works, but sometimes it goes to an extreme where it can be a little more than "unoriginal." I dunno, I sorta like people doing stuff other than the norm....

I think what we're dealing with here are simply very different senses of humour... I'm used to not taking most things people say or do seriously, so Synj's stuff hits me like a 16-ton weight. In a good way.

Ugh. Pissing contests like this are why I don't post here anymore. It's just not fun. Everything one person does, is scrutinized beyond necessity, and often potshots are taken for no fucking reason whatsoever at the artist themselves. I for one like Synj's work. It's a nice break from every single 'anime-inspired' or 'traced photo' pic that seems to taint nearly every thread here...It's original. It's not another 'Dragonball Z' or 'Big man with a bigger gun' everytime he posts.

One man's scribbles are another man's gold.

--Steve

P.S. Didn't mean to offend anyone with the above statement, but I haven't been on the board for nearly 2 months. I just stopped by today with a fresh look on it, and this is the first thread I find.

ok, so synj doesn't make things that fit into the "classical art" category... so what?
After seeing photoreal after photoreal synj's stuff bring me to my knees in laughter..
you could argue that I'm being immature, fine. I'll stay that way...

PS. And I don't give a damn if person A used program B to make art C!

I don't think synj is immature at all. I think he has a really extreme sense of humor and imagination which I take full advantage of. If you read my past posts, you would probably say I'm very immature. I say dumb shit all the time and make stupid dick jokes all a long side of the road. But I can tell you, in all seriousness, it's not that I'm immature. I'm just extremely intelligent, good looking, and have a nice car. Synj is great.. 'cept he does plug synj.net all out his ass all day long.. but still, he's magical.

Hehehe...man, you need a tough skin to post anything to such a freely accessed forum. Unfortunately some people don't realize that, and that is when people get their feelings hurt. Making an issue of someone's carelessness or inflamatory remarks will just compound the issue. I hate it as much as anyone that I feel the need to wear a jock-strap and football gear any time I post to this forum, but you got to just take the good with the bad (then just flame their email so that personal issues don't clutter the message board). Most of us can tell the difference between a constructive critizism and a flame, so why even respond to those who have nothing good to offer (well, unless you want to - sometimes it can almost be enjoyable to get into irrational arguements)?

Okay...I'm stepping down from my high horse now.

Synj: Does your spine extend into your ballsack...how the hell do you stand straight up on them? ;-)

synj: I have my own style, but I've grown tired of only being able to do that one. My pencil art tends to be smoothly shaded with hard outlines. My photoshop work tends to be highly smoothed with lots of color. My pen work tends to be stipple. If you look on my site you'll see all those styles, and for the most part ONLY those styles. Most of the work on my site is REALLY old as well as lately I haven't had time to work on my personal artwork.

There's an odd thing called a "Master Study" where you copy someone else's style of work, wheither the "master" invented the style or not matters little, I just happened to find Micke's work exceptionally good. I chose not to copy one of Micke's works and just try and do my own spin on layout and character.

Chapel: No shit Micke didn't invent it... I'm just naming my current inspiration for trying this style. The line quality in Micke's work is something I have yet to see anyone else on this forum match. (I'm not looking for anyone to post their work to say, "look, see, I'm just as good!" So don't.)

Back to my picture. I posted it only to get feedback on what looked "wrong" so that I could get the ink/pen style of art looking better, both using photoshop and in real life.

syjn: Btw, your comment makes me not want to post art here anymore.

This goes to everyone. It's stupid to start fights here, do it in e-mail if you must, but don't put someone down publicly, that's just not kosher. People post their art to this forum for two things (for the most part), recognition and criticism. Lets try and keep our replies along those lines.

Shall we get back to the actual image?
There's something odd about the thighs - they seem too thin, almost flat. It also kind of leaves me wondering if his back shouldn't be arched more with his butt that high up...
