Faust... glad to see ya back...
For what it's worth, here's my opinion, I love the second one because it makes more of an impact to me.... it appears that a raging flame or enlightened awakeing is beyond the title..... and I want to see beyond it..
sorry, but the first one doesn't do it for me....

Hey, I didn't mean anything by it. =) I'm being honest in saying that I like it. It's simple, damaged, ... does the job right imo. -- but I'm no designer. The only thing I might change (in the top ver) is the gaussian blur layer -- I'd just make it some ink print on the tarnished paper/concrete texture, so I'd remove or lower the intensity of the blur. |

I'd get a better idea on how to critique it if I knew what this was for. Is it a CD cover for a portfolio cd?

yes. if i ever get the money, it will be a digipak. or a carton pocket. or a 7" pocket if i figure out a way to stick a cd in to that. a shape disc would be the ultimate coolness. but that'd require so much money it's not even funny. i suddenly find out what it was like to be totally broke again...
something i wrote on pseudoart, that i should propably have written here as well. call it detail refining.
"one of the points of the half assed typography elements is to give an image of non-linear non-technical/mathematichal (i am not quite sure how to put this into english... why can't the whole world adapt finnish? non technical/mathematichal = non.. non cornery non defined non sharp non straightforward non etc) ..work.
it is like an synopsis of my work- tilted, different, twisted, wrong, broken (no pun intended...), jussi-like (..), while still keeping it simple and small.
though it sure beats me if i succeeded in that or not.
also, it doesn't matter if you look at it the way it is, or flip it vertically, it still looks equally wrong. (or should i say, snapped, instead of wrong. i don't mean wrong as in "fuck this look bad", but in a "this is a calculated mindfuck" kind of way.)
the target audience of this is primarily myself. potential employers and whatnot are secondary. i have big visions for this. i am not going to be stopped by any limits or rules or ways or unwritten designers' bibles or any of that bullshit. i will make the visual side of this ..thing reflect myself. i will think through everything, i will fill it with barely noticeable references and whatnot, including inside jokes, things that have happened in my life, views, opinions, yadda dadda.
if this shit is called "designing", then i'm not that sure if i like it anymore... it's too much work. i dislike thinking.
but i enjoy it as well. it gives the work some depth. although i kind of dread getting too personal and meaningful with my work. though i like the idea of including dozens of references and whatnot in it that nobody will ever figure out.."
werd.
more people. you're supposed to tear and maim it, not scratch the edges...

Faust.. I really perfer the first one. The second is nice too though.
The first has that really cool texture to it and that gives it that extra UMPH that it should have. The logo is also really sweet.
I have about 900 more things to say about this if you didnt get what you needed from other users... but i cant say it all now. NIN is on all weekend and i am gunna go watch it @ a friends house .. peace out and if you want more input - [email protected]

Okay, for starters, I like the second one better. The first one would be greatly improved if you took away the blur behind your black "logo" type (which I like by the way).
What I would do to change the 2nd one: I would definitely provide some sort of texture in the background, especially since you are into making textures. But I wouldn't go with such a "citrus" color combination. Maybe dark black/grey/browns...that would compliment your white type just as well as this solid black background you have there. As for the placement, I would put the logo off it's vertical and horizontal centers...shift it maybe down and to the right or left, thus making everything more dynamic.
Anyway, that's about all I have right now, good luck w/ that

Nice faust, welcome back btw(for however long it may be).
The first one could have the background darkend slightly on it as I think it takes away from the Logo.
The 2nd one is fine, not alot to crit on the logo looks good, you captured the style perfectly wtihout ripping anything.
I just wish I was able to read it

Frankly, I think the whole thing is a bit boring, really. The logo is nice enough, but just slapping it onto a black background or what looks like some half-assed, blurry texture does little to catch the eye. Perhaps putting something into the image more than the logo and the background would make it a bit more interesting eh? Even the NIN album cover has more going on than this does.
I do like the logo on the side of the picture rather than the center. When it's in the center it feels like an island of something in a vast sea of nothing. When it is on the side, at least it is nicely framing the nothing.
I also agree with Sc00p, the orangey colors are bad. Although I am partial to it, the blue on white preview you did (#8) and the grey/red/white one (#9) are the best ones in terms of their color set.

okay. i COULD throw in a excuse along the lines of "but the vast sea of nothing is ment to reflect myself..." but err. nah.
maybe i'll just delete the files and start over.

my person gut feeling woudl say 7 or 9 faust, but I only like the text on them. the background is too bland. I think that text would look good on a background in the similar style to the book art for the nin fragile album. of course darker, because that fits the font better because it's not squeeky clean like the fonts used in that nin cover art. the text is there in 7 and 9, but the background needs more going on. be careful not to loose imphasis and draw attention away from the text though if you use this style. good luck friend. heh. |

I'm not saying .. you shouldn't change this at all ... but i think is between 7, 8 or 9 .. the backgrounds could be touched up a little bit .. but they look fine the way they are ,,, .. |

I have to agree with the fellas that the background is a bit vague. The logo (complete with the phrase the owls aren't what they seem)is really well thought out and holds alot of strong elements to it.
And..since you're going for a whole roughed-up distressed sort of look, maybe beating up a surface texture (I realize the scratched metal texture is so cliche). But I'm sure something else would come to mind. So run with it. I wouldn't scrap this one. I can tell it captures the essence of faust (which is highly toxic)
So let it flow.

I'd go with number 8, but I would emphasise the rubber-stamp feel of the logo by perhaps smudging or reducing the visibility of the larger letters.
reminds me of a postmark I once knew....
Good Luck

1 or 8, 1 catchs your eye more but in a sea of brightly colored cd covers it would blend, 8 would just look cooler, methinks |

i also notice the people have yet to develop. . .. . .anything. i'm waiting for the big brother to erase my isp account.
worry not, i still hate the net, i hate every people online, which was proved by my last night's visit to irc.. i was actually beginning to enjoy dealing with people (outside of irc) that don't instantly start dissing my love and talk insane and perverted shit like i should just forget about it and move on and other incomprehensibly sick things.
*shrug*
i was kinda hoping i'd get something out of asking you guys for tear-apart-critiqu on this. go figure.
out.

which version do you like more?
-why?
-how?
-which part of it do you like the most?
look at something else for 5 minutes, then look at it again and answer the same questions
it's a cd cover. it's a project. it'll be big. it'll be everything. images text audio video everything. and the sad part is, i've made sure i am capable of doing all of my plans, and have the resources. the only thing you will see online of it (most likely) is this- the cover.
the influences for the design should be quite obvious.. but i've thought carefully about every bit of the logo/whatever. i spent 4 hours planning it. it's got stuff in it that are very difficult to ...decypher into thoughts/words. it's got my fucking soul blood in it. not that any of you will see *that* bit, but still.
TEAR IT APAAAAAAAAaaart! give me everything. pros cons everything.
(pssst. david carson rocks.)

that's not very helpful you know frost ): .
maybe listening to Broken through the whole night had something to do with that. plus i've, for some time, wanted to take the best bits of the nin logo and make something out of it. no, this is not ripping. this is skilled thieving in a manner that still does not count as morally and ideally and ethically fucked up deed.
really. i'm actually trying to make something that looks good for once.
and what comes to my hate of internet, it's still there. but since i need someone else to look at these for me (the whole youcantseethenegativeaspectsyourselfblaablabblalblablalblabalbaalaaagaahargh deal) and i managed to resurrect (fucking level 6 resurrect spell in your face!) my modem and my server still seems to be alive (what's up with that? i dislike!) i decided to *gasp* get online. blablablabla. and actually ask for help.

"tear apart critique?" here you go:
I don't like both of them 100%. the one with the centered letters looks better to me if thought to be a cd cover.
I would put the letters off center vertically (in a 2/3 position in height) and add some faint typography stuff to the background.
And don't kill me, this was just my honest opinion.
