In the spirit of Mozeman's drawing from life exercise, I thought I'd post these travel sketches I did a few years ago. I think this is another aspect of what Moze is talking about - going out into your environment and drawing what you see/experience.

Anyway, I'm not posting these with the intent that "THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE," but rather as "how one relatively under-art-educated guy does it."

I've got more of these, as well as some thoughts on this kind of drawing if anyone is interested.

Thanks for your time.

p.s. Sorry about the giant images. I hope nobody's connection has a meltdown...

Looks great Francis! Wish I had the guts to stick out pen and paper in public... =)

(oh, what was that propellerhead country comment the other day about?)

Oh, it was just a little joke - the technical level of your explanation was starting to go over my head, and I felt my eyes glaze over.

No offense meant, I was having some fun at your expense.

Francis;

This stuff is great.

You bring up an excellent point and one that I should address in a future lesson.

Environments. I will often sketch environments when there are no people to sketch and sometimes when what a person is doing is integrated into the background. And sometimes just for practice doing full environments (I do layouts in my work; this helps a lot) Sketching environments helps you develop light and shadow, composition, structure and architecture, and making your characters part of their surroundings.

Your stuff is great, I especially like the sketch on top. It's loose and fast. Where is this?

Nice sketches Francis...it reminds me of the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan. I'm a big fan of ancient sites and have hit several in my time.

Oh..btw. I *LOVE* the design elements of the circles on the left on your second piece. Very art deco. hehehehe

Har har Saltydog.

Mozeman et al, these images are in fact from Mexico. The top one is from a Mayan site on the Yucatan coast called Tulum. It's one of the better known archeological sites. The second is from a small village called Celestun, also in the Yucatan.
