Hair has to have soft edges to it's contour. Don't replicate the bad silo job that was produced on the cover. Here is an example of what I'm talking about. I just did this silo of a girl for the front of a toy package. The image will be used at about .5" wide so I didn't have to be so anal about the hair, but you can maybe get what I mean about soften the edges. I was also instructed by the client to clean up the hair and not make it so wild, hence the difference in shape to the original so here it is. The first is the one I did, the second is from the studio photography.

I think it just depends on what your goal is. Since he has already done a good job of doing very minute details almost to the pixel level, why not complete the picture this way and keep it homogeneous? Hair is very fine, and in this case, the hair is quite into focus, and I think you would see the hair texture, and not just an impression of hair using a big brush. Granted in many cases if your doing more than a copy of a pic with less detail, you'd probably want to overview the hair detail, but I don't think this is the case.

General : The 'montage' looks good, but I don't think I like the fuzzy/blurry brush effect on the hair... it really looks touched up. No offense. =)

Frost- no offense taken, this pic is going to be reproduced very small, and in the grand scope of the project the client isn't truly concerned with the appearance of the kids on the pack they're really concerned with making their product look good. I just wanted to more or less illustrate what I was saying in my post.

AHA! Now this just takes the piss, but go and look at the picture that HumanClay posted about 10 posts up (while trying to start his conpiracy theory ) and look at the hair in that - which is a direct alpha channel type merge of my pic on top of the photo. Look at the way the hair looks - that's exactly what I wanted it to look like when I drew it - DOH!!

It'd be cheating to use that, so I'll have to go and learn how to draw it like that in first place...

Take a look at this:

(sigh!) :/

Here's my other effort at drawing this particular fox. I think I was obsessed...

And nobody is gonna tell me that I retouched a photo to get that! It's pure HB pencil on a sheet of A3 (that's kinda like twice 'letter' sized paper to those on the other side).
