Here is a photo of a refugee I got off CNN.com today. I used it for reference, but I also traced a *very* basic and quick contour of her face and hand to start me off. I tried sketching her 3 or 4 times before resorting to this. I'm using a mouse and I have a little trouble sketching with Photoshop. I didn't pay much attention to the sketch anyway, I wasn't trying to make an exact replica of the photo, I was only trying to capture her mood. Which appears to be someone who is deep in their thoughts.
The caption says that she's sitting in a bus, so I'm not sure what the clouds are doing there, they must be a reflection off the window, but I just drew them as a background.
Critics are welcome.

Great idea! I was involved in some pubic awareness productions during the Kosovo problem and came across many of these photos. Just brings back memories. (by the way, we thought we'd give the audience a taste of what it would be like to be in Kosovo at the time- with the lights off and big speakers blaring explosions and gun shots etc + real explosions courtesy of a chemistry friend. It got across the message and raised about $10,000 in donations...)
Re: the painting- I'm shocked at the amount of people still using mice to do digital painting! It is quite well done for a mouse painting! Maybe the background could be darkened a little and more contrast added all over. The eye needs some work to get that glazed, looking-at-nothing appearance. And the mouth you may want to make a little sadder.
My art teacher always got on my back when I was in school- pointing out how little amount of contrast I have in my drawings- I still don't put enough in- but at least I can see when it's needed now =)
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback Shannon, I'll try and make her look sadder. As for the glazed look in her eyes, I know what you mean, but I'm not sure how to draw it. And when you say that it needs more contrast, do you mean in her skin tones, or simply between her and the background? |

Generally, the contrast all over, but especially the background, as to creat some depth. Maybe a little detail in the background to give a sense of where she is (an alleyway, refugee camp etc)
good luck! =)

hi!
imho its not THAT big difference if you draw with mouse or pen according to picture quality. Youre faster but you can't draw "better" with a pen.
To the pic: I think there is something wrong on her face ( I guess the nose is too long and her eyebrow needs some work). The background could also need a bit more attention.

Okay, I touched it up a bit. I added more contrast in the face and the scarf. I gave her a nose job, I agree that it was too long. I tried to make her look sadder. I touched up the eye a little, but I'm still not sure how to get her to look into nothingness. I didn't really do much to the background, I just removed some clouds next to her so that she would stand out more and added a bit of pink to it.

I just added a tear rolling down her cheek and darkened the background.
